More swine flu cases, human-to-human transmission detected in Vietnam
Vietnam on June 7 reported three new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1), taking the total number of cases so far to 13, and confirmed transmission between humans in one of them.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health (DoH) confirmed that the three new swine flu-affected people returned from the US. A 10-year-old boy, his mother, and his three-year-old sister arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on June 5 after transiting in Hong Kong.
Discovering the boy had high fever, the airport quarantine center took him in and sent samples to the Pasteur Institute, which found him positive for the A/H1N1 flu virus.
Immediately, his mother and sister were taken to Children’s Hospital No.1 and they too tested positive.
Health authorities are now trying to trace the other passengers who arrived on the same flight as the three infected people.
On the same day, the DoH announced a case of human-to-human A/H1N1 transmission. A 19-year-old girl in the southern province of Dong Nai has never been abroad but has tested positive for the flu.
She lives with four infected people -- a 39-year-old woman and her three children who arrived from the US on May 29.
The head of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment, Nguyen Huy Nga, fears a possible epidemic since awareness is low in the country.
The Ministry of Health has warned passengers returning from affected nations to keep away from other people and wear masks in public places to avoid transmitting the disease.
At Tan Son Nhat airport, passengers arriving from the US, Japan, Hong Kong (China), and Taiwan (China) and suspected to be infected are being quarantined for tests.
DoH director Nguyen Van Chau has called for setting up an inter-regional steering team on the disease and asked the city’s Tropical Diseases Hospital share the burden with the Pasteur Institute which is being overrun by people seeking to get tested. More equipment is being provided to medical establishments.

NEW DELHI: Delhi reported its first case of human-to-human transmission of the deadly H1N1 influenza virus on Sunday with scientists confirming The 35-year-old man, believed to be a close relative of a well-known businessman associated with a pharma company, had returned to Delhi on June 2 from New York onboard an Air India flight (AI-102) and developed symptoms of H1N1 swine flu on June 4, following which he tested positive. The passenger was put on quarantine inside his farmhouse at Rajokri near the Palam airport. On Sunday, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that the man's mother has also tested positive. The sample is, however, being sent to National Institute of Virology (Pune) for final confirmation. Union health ministry officials told TOI, ``Both the man and his mother were administered Tamiflu on June 4 even before their samples tested positive. The samples of the servants in the house have also been picked up. The man was travelling in the business class of Air India from New York, which had just one more passenger who is now being tracked down.'' The total number of H1N1 cases in India has climbed to 10 since the virus surfaced in the country on May 16. H1N1, which scientists fear could be the world's next pandemic, has spread to 69 countries, infected more than 22,000 people and killed 125. Meanwhile, Hyderabad saw its second case of human-to-human transmission of the deadly virus, the latest victim being a 25-year-old passenger who sat next to the 20-year-old medical student who got infected after returning from a holiday in Toronto on June 3. The passenger was sitting in the row next to the infected student in British Airways flight BA 277. All his close contacts are being traced and would be administered Tamiflu, the only anti-viral known to be effective against H1N1, as a preventive measure. Hyderabad had reported its first case of local human-to-human transmission of H1N1 on Saturday when a 28-year-old man who had arrived in the city from the US was found to have passed the infection to his brother. Even though Union health ministry officials say there is still no evidence yet of a cluster of cases in India that would entail banning all public meetings and putting in place social distancing mechanisms, they admit that cases will definitely start to spread far and wide. | |||||||
Andhra requests Centre for PPE to contain swine flu
A team of officials from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), which inspected the facilities to tackle swine flu in the state, announced that a fully equipped swine flu surveillance center would be set up at Hyderabad soon to screen all suspected cases. Hyderabad has reported the largest number of influenza A (H1N1) cases, that is six out of eight cases in the country.

"The NICD will also help us by imparting training to our medical personnel with regard to handling of the flu cases," Sudarshan Reddy told HT.
He said that there was absolutely no threat to local population even though one case of human-to-human transmission has been detected. "We are strengthening the screening of all passengers arriving at Hyderabad airport," he said and added that people should report any suspected cases to the authorities promptly.
Five more passengers who traveled on the British Airways flight on May 31, in which the infected techie was traveling, have contacted the authorities. They told the officials that they have none of the flu symptoms and would report back to chest hospital soon.
Meanwhile, chest hospital sources said that they were awaiting the NICD report about the four people referred to the hospital on suspicion. "We will take suitable action after receiving the reports," said a doctor.

India confirms three fresh swine flu cases, total eight
Jun 6, 2009 - 6:31:39 PM
By IANS, [RxPG] Hyderabad/New Delhi, June 6 - India Saturday reported three fresh cases of swine flu, including a woman and her four-and-a-half-year old daughter, in the Andhra Pradesh capital, taking the total confirmed cases to eight so far.
Those who tested positive for influenza A - also include the 24-year-old brother of a techie who had returned from the US May 31 with the infection. Doctors and health officials said this is the first indigenous case of swine flu in India.
'While others who tested positive had come from other countries, the 24-year-old is the first person to be infected without travelling abroad,' L.V. Subrahmanyam, principal secretary health, government of Andhra Pradesh, told IANS.
Of the eight cases, six are from Hyderabad, which also reported the first case in the country May 16.
A 30-year-old woman and her four-and-a-half-year old daughter, who travelled along with the 28-year-old techie from Philadelphia to Hyderabad via London on May 31 were also found infected.
All the infected people have been kept in isolation and are being treated at the government-run Chest Hospital in Hyderabad.
Four others who travelled with the techie by British Airways flight BA 277 on May 31 are also under observation. 'We have sent samples of two of them to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases -, New Delhi, while the samples of two others are being sent,' Subrahmanyam said.
The official said all those who travelled with the techie were being traced. Health officials have already appealed to those who travelled in proximity to the man to come forward and undergo the tests at the Chest Hospital, the nodal centre to deal with swine flu cases.
The officials asked all the air passengers who had developed swine flu symptoms after reaching home to approach the Chest Hospital as it alone has the required facilities to quarantine the patients and treat them. 'Some passengers are going to private hospitals but this will not help,' said K. Subhakar, the coordinator of the nodal centre.
Subrahmanyam said all international air passengers were being screened after their arrival at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad here. Those found with visible symptoms of swine flu are being directly sent to the Chest Hospital.
'We have so far screened 80,000 passengers at the airport,' said the official. He also confirmed that a team of doctors from NICD is arriving in Hyderabad to study the steps taken to screen the passengers and treat the confirmed cases.
The 28-year-old techie who arrived from Philadelphia on May 31 had gone home after his arrival at the airport. He later developed high fever and approached the Chest Hospital on June 2. The next day he tested positive for H1N1 influenza.
In New Delhi, Shiv Lal, head of NICD, told IANS that there were now eight confirmed cases of swine flu in India.
'It is now confirmed that the techie transmitted the virus to his brother and a girl and her mother who were travelling with him on the same flight,' he said.
'The two adults have been put on - Oseltamivir, as are the others,' Lal said.
The girl is being given Tamiflu syrup to combat the virus. 'She is very young to take the drugs given to adults so we are giving her the syrup,' he said.
'The NICD team will reach Hyderabad tonight along with a multi-disciplinary rapid response team,' Lal said.
Lal said they have so far tested over 150 samples of which eight were found to be confirmed swine flu cases.
India reported its first swine flu infection May 16 - that of a 23-year-old man who travelled by Emirates Airline from New York to Hyderabad via Dubai. He has now been discharged after treatment.
Subhakar said if the World Health Organisation - raises the level of pandemic alert to six for India, this would solve the problem. 'If WHO declares level six, the borders of India will be closed for all those countries affected by the swine flu,' he said.
Health screening of passengers coming from the affected countries is continuing at 21 international airports and over 1.3 million passengers have been screened so far.
The WHO has reported about 21,940 confirmed cases of influenza A- infection from 69 countries and 125 deaths till June 5.

H1N1 flu infections climb to nearly 22,000
The World Health Organization's (WHO) latest update on Friday (June 5) officially reported 21,940 cases of influenza A (H1N1) virus, commonly known as swine flu, including 125 deaths since the outbreak began in April. Three more countries were added to the WHO's list of affected countries on Friday - Barbados, Luxembourg and Saudi Arabia, which brought the total number of affected countries to 69. The US continues to report the most H1N1 flu infections with 11,054 cases, including 17 deaths, while Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak, confirms a significantly lower number of cases with 5,563 and a higher number of casualties with 103, according to the WHO's figures. Friday's updated numbers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are higher, as they factor in both confirmed and probable cases. The US agency reported a total of 13,217 confirmed cases in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and 27 deaths. Ten more deaths - Connecticut (1), Illinois (2), Michigan (1), New York (4), Utah (1), Virginia (1) - have been reported since Wednesday's (June 3) CDC update and Wisconsin continues to be the hardest-hit state with 2,217 cases. An emergency meeting was held on Friday by WHO experts to discuss whether a full-scale H1N1 flu pandemic would be declared. The UN agency kept its pandemic flu alert at Phase 5, but agreed that in the future, alert changes would reflect the severity of an outbreak, in addition to its geographical spread, Reuters reported. Discussion to alter the WHO's pandemic alert scale arose due to criticism that it may have caused unnecessary panic about the new flu strain, which seems to cause mainly mild illness. During the meeting, WHO experts again advised countries not to close borders or restrict international travel as the strategy was deemed ineffective. Vaccine development was also discussed, and the WHO said the production of the seasonal flu vaccine should continue for now as work progresses to develop a vaccine against the H1N1 flu. Meanwhile, Canadian health officials on Friday developed a network of researchers to expedite research on influenza, Reuters reported. According to Canadian Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq, the network, consisting of 80 scientists from 30 research and public health institutions, will receive US$9.7 million (10.8 million Canadian dollars) over the course of the next three years. Although the outbreak has infected 1,795 Canadians, including three casualties, the impact has been relatively mild. However, Aglukkaq was quoted as saying, "we must be vigilant and we must be ready to respond, and of course research will play a major role in this." Swine influenza has previously been identified as a contagious respiratory disease that commonly infects pigs and is caused by a type-A influenza. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is known as a mix of human and animal versions. The dangers of this strain exist when the flu spreads from human to human instead of from animals to humans, as the virus can continue to mutate, making it difficult to treat and combat because people do not have natural immunity.
Hong Kong Adds 3 Swine Flu Cases, Total Reaches 33 (Update1)
June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong confirmed three new cases of human swine influenza, bringing the total in the city to 33, the health department said.
All three patients arrived in Hong Kong on overseas flights, according to a statement on the government Web site today. The first was a 20-year-old woman studying in Switzerland; the second was a man, 18, studying in Toronto; the third was a 25- year-old woman returning from Vancouver.
Separately, mainland China confirmed five more cases of the disease, known as A(H1N1), raising its total to 72, state newspaper China Daily reported, citing health officials.
The World Health Organization says 21,940 cases, including 125 deaths, have been reported in 69 countries. In most cases, the illness causes symptoms no more serious than seasonal flu.
Singapore’s health ministry today said one more swine flu case was confirmed, for a total count of 15. The patient has “relatively mild symptoms” and is stable, the department said in a statement yesterday.
South Korea said one more person was confirmed with the virus, bringing its tally to 47. Malaysia confirmed its seventh case yesterday.
New infrared scanners are being developed that can detect respiratory infections earlier than current temperature monitors, the South China Morning Post reported today, citing scientists.

New Plasmodium species found in chimpanzees
-------------------------------------------
Scientists from France and Gabon have published the discovery of a
new Plasmodium that infects chimpanzees in central Africa.
In the paper published in the journal PLoS Pathogens, the scientists
suggest that the new species, named _Plasmodium gaboni_ is closely
related to _Plasmodium falciparum_, the most severe human malaria parasite.
The scientists discovered the new Plasmodium species by analysing 19
chimpanzees in a village in Gabon; 2 of the chimpanzees were infected
with the parasite and sequencing the mitochondrial genome revealed
that it belonged to a new species of Plasmodium, and is closely
related to P. falciparum.
According to the scientists from the Center for Medical Research
Franceville and the Institute of Research for Development, the
discovery is an important step to establish a possible relationship
between malaria which affects humans and chimpanzees.

[_Plasmodium gaboni_ is a new species closely related to _Plasmodium
falciparum_ in humans, and _Plasmodium reichenowi_ is also in found in
chimpanzees. _P. gaboni_ separated from the Plasmodium clade earlier
than _P. falciparum_ and _P. reichenowi_ (see fig. 1 "Phylogenetic
relationships among
Plasmodium species" in the reference above). _P. falciparum_ and _P.
reichenowi_ (see Rodhain J, Dellaert R. Studies on Plasmodium schwetzi
E. Brumpt. III. Plasmodium schwetzi infection in humans. Ann Soc Belg
Med Trop 1955;35:757-75). In areas where humans and chimpanzees live
close together as in part of west and central Africa, it is likely
that human infections from both _P.gaboni_, _P. reichenow_ and _P.
schwetzi_ are unnoticed in humans and misclassified as _P. falciparum_
and _P. vivax_ respectively. Blood meal identifications in local
mosquito populations would probably identify chimpanzee blood as
human blood due to cross reactivity of the antibodies used. Genetic
studies in humans in these areas are therefore needed to see if
indeed chimpanzee malaria species are found in humans, just as such
studies identified _P. knowlesi_ in humans in southeast Asia -- see

S.Korea confirms 47th case
SEOUL (South Korea) - SOUTH Korea's health ministry says it has confirmed one more case of swine flu, bringing the country's total to 47.
The Health Ministry said in a statement Sunday that a 25-year-old South Korean woman tested positive for the virus on Saturday following a recent trip to China.
It says she took the same flight on Monday from South Korea to China as an American man who later tested positive for swine flu and has been quarantined in China.
The statement says that of the country's 47 cases, only six remain quarantined. -- AP
China reports 5 more swine flu cases, total at 72
Associated Press , Beijing Sun, 06/07/2009 10:41 AM World
Chinese health authorities have reported five more cases of swine flu in people who recently arrived from the U.S. and Canada, bringing the total number on the mainland to 72.
The newly infected people were in Beijing and the provinces of Hubei, Guangdong and Sichuan, the Health Ministry and local health bureaus said Saturday.
Authorities have quarantined 15 people in close contact with two women in Beijing who tested positive for swine flu after arriving from the U.S. a few days ago, the Beijing health bureau said.
Meanwhile, Guangdong officials were working to locate people in contact with an infected man who arrived from Canada on Friday.
The two other cases were in Chinese Americans who arrived from U.S. cities.
Authorities have been enforcing quarantines and temperature checks at airports throughout the country to prevent the virus from spreading.
The World Health Organization said it has spread to 69 countries and infected nearly 22,000 people. Most of the cases have been mild, though 126 people have died as a result of the disease.

Phillipines-CHEd postpones opening of classes
Moves start to June 15 due to flu virus threat
Universities urged to upgrade sanitation facilities
The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) announced yesterday that the opening of classes for colleges and universities would be postponed for a week due to concerns on the looming threat of Influenza A (H1N1) in the country.
Chairman Emmanuel Angeles of CHEd said classes will open on Monday, June 15, instead of June 8. Other colleges and universities reset their classes opening to June 16 and 17.
The CHEd’s decision to reset the opening of classes followed the confirmation of Influenza A cases on three students, two of them Japanese nationals, of De La Salle University (DLSU) on Taft Ave., Malate, Manila. De La Salle officials cancelled classes in its main campus as it imposed a ten-day quarantine or up to June 14.
Angeles said the postponement of classes will enable the students, especially those coming from abroad, ample time to check on their health and go on self-quarantine in case of any symptoms of the virus.
Three universities in Metro Manila earlier reset the opening of their classes. The University of Santo Tomas (UST) and University of the Philippines – Manila (UP-M) campus moved their classes opening from June 8 to June 15 while Far Eastern University reset its opening to June 17.
The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) in Intramuros also reset the opening of classes to June 15 as university officials prepared also for the city university’s 44th foundation day celebration on June 18 and 19 with former President Fidel V. Ramos leading the guests.
The Department of Health has reported 33 swine flu cases, but all have shown mild symptoms, according to Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III. The country has the most number of swine flu cases in Southeast Asia according to the World Health Organization.
Angeles said that CHEd is coordinating closely with the Department of Health in monitoring the country’s schools, most especially DLSU’s situation. "Our colleges and universities have many foreign students who are coming from different countries that have swine flu victims," Angeles said.
As this developed, Vice President Noli De Castro said that schools which postponed the opening of their classes due to the threat of influenza A(H1N1) should invest in procuring sanitation products such as hand sanitizers or hand wash and place them in their comfort rooms for the protection of the students.
"After the suspension of their classes, how can they be sure that the threat, the virus, will go away," De Castro said.
The pronouncement came after several top schools in Metro Manila announced that they will postpone the opening of classes after the confirmation of cases of infection of the influenza A(H1N1) virus involving students of De La Salle University.
These schools include University of Asia and the Pacific (UAP), St. Paul University Manila, UST and FEU.
"Students and employees who recently went abroad for summer vacation are advised to go on self-quarantine for 10 days and to visit their personal doctors if influenza-like symptoms manifest within this period," said the UAP.
The UAP clarified, however, that "at present, we have no reported case of Influenza A(H1N1) virus among our students and employees. We took merely as a precaution."
St. Paul University Manila, in a separate statement, said that its president Wynna Marie A. Medina announced the postponement of the opening of classes to June 16.
"The postponement has been decided upon to give the university a chance to set precautionary measures in place," it said.
St. Paul University said that enrolment in the university would continue, and that employees are expected to report for work despite the postponement of opening of classes.

India-Human to human spread reported
Hyderabad/ND, Jun 6: The first case of human-to-human transmission of the deadly virus of swine flu in the country was reported from Hyderabad, raising concerns and pushing up the number of persons af-flicted by the disease to seven today.
The human-to-human transmission took place when a man, who came back from the United States on May 31, infected his youn-ger brother who was living in Hyderabad. Both of them have tested positive for the disease.
One more case was re-ported in Karimnagar locali- ty of Hyderabad. A mother-son duo, who were sitting two rows behind the pas-senger from the United Sta- tes, also reported symptoms of flu.
While the child tested positive, the results of the tests on the mother are yet to come.
Though the severity of the infection cannot be said to be more, human-to-human transmission is a cause of concern as this means that the virus is cir-culating in the environment now, Director of the Indian Council for Medical Res-earch (ICMR) Dr VN Katoch told said.
"There might also be a spurt in the cases of swine flu after September as gene-rally we see an increase in cases of common influenza during this period," he said.
The Centre has taken im-mediate steps and rushed Rapid Action Teams to Hy-derabad to spruce up con- tainment measures.
The total number of posi-tive cases has gone upto seven with the latest cases from Hyderabad.
According to Shivlal, Di-rector of the National Ins- titute of Communicable Di-seases (NICD), who headed a Central team to Hydera-bad, though basic measures have to be taken by the State Government, the Centre has formed two teams to moni-tor the situation in Hyde- rabad and Karimnagar.
The Government has al-ready banned the import of livestock and its products from all countries in wake of the spread of the swine flu.
It has also prohibited im-ports of live poultry, egg and its products, live pigs, pathological material, un-processed feathers from the countries reporting avian influenza.
The World Health Orga-nisation has so far reported 19,273 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1 infection from 66 countries as on June 3, 2009. The disease has so far claimed 117 lives. Health screening of passengers coming from affected countries is continuing at 21 international airports in India. PTI

Japan-Medical staff to get new-flu comp
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Medical workers who contract the new type of influenza from patients and who then have to take time off work will be compensated for income lost while they are on sick leave, government officials said.
The medical institution where the worker is employed also will receive compensation.
The compensation will be paid from a 1 trillion yen temporary subsidy for local revitalization and measures for tackling the economic crisis, which has been newly created in the supplementary budget for this fiscal year.
The compensation will be paid from this autumn through local governments who have requested the money from the central government.
As of Saturday, there had been no reports of secondary infection with the new flu among medical workers.
In May, when the number of people in the nation suffering from the virus started rising, local governments began pressing the central government for sick leave compensation in the event of medical workers becoming infected with the new flu and being forced to recuperate at home.
Some argue that the risk of secondary infection among medical workers has increased since May 22, when the government's new policy allowed people suspected of being infected with the new flu to seek treatment not only at fever clinics for treating such people but also at ordinary hospitals and clinics in areas where the number of new flu patients had soared.
The government sees the compensation as part of its regional support measures and examined whether the subsidy could be used for this purpose before reaching its decision. The main purpose of the subsidy is economic measures, but the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry interpreted the compensation for doctors and other medical workers as assuring public safety and security, which is one of the subsidy's purposes.
The government will allow the subsidy to be used for some other new flu related purposes as well, such as salaries for nonresident doctors working at fever clinics and phone line connection fees at fever consultation centers.
Previously, the government granted more flexible uses of the subsidy as anti-new flu measures. For example, it can also be used to pay cancellation fees when a school trip must be called off because of a new flu scare.
