Vietnam-H5N1 flu is back
Influenza A/H5N1 avian influenza are now back to raging in a number of local people are concerned that many who spread fear
early this year the country recorded seven cases of influenza A/H5N1 virus, including two cases died in Tien Giang and Binh Duong. In our country, influenza A/H5N1 in humans were reported from January 12-2003 and since then has recorded scattered in many localities.
Higher risk of outbreaks every year
In three years, each year the country recorded from 5 to 8 cases of influenza A/H5N1 virus infection and the mortality rate from 70% to 100%. From 2003 to date has infected 119 people, including 60 deaths. Currently our country is among the countries most deaths in the world because influenza A/H5N1.
According to the evaluation of scientists, the characteristics of influenza A/H5N1 in Vietnam remains a displaced distribution of each individual case, non-beam assemblies. H5N1 flu is very complex evolution and mechanisms of disease transmission is inhalation or eating, that is when people are exposed to sick poultry, egg products, such as illness, eating poultry sick ...
Thus, the avian flu is back in a series of localities such as Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh will be favorable to the spread of influenza A/H5N1. Especially laboratory, Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) has detected a flow rate of ducks infected with bird flu in an average of 4.2% this year while poultry increased to 16%, making the risk of an outbreak would be higher than usual.

Emergency care for a patient infected with influenza A/H5N1
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien, director of the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, despite concerns that from March to now our country is not recorded new cases of influenza A/H5N1, but this risk in outbreak People are very high.
From actual influenza A/H5N1 outbreaks occurred over the years, many scientists have warned if not timely prevent the spread of influenza A/H5N1 virus in poultry and aquatic birds are very easily lead to influenza A/H5N1 in humans.
Especially during New Year demand for trade access, transport and slaughter of poultry increased, cold and wet weather are ideal conditions for virus growth and spread to humans.
More deaths due to subjective
No slaughtering infected poultry use
Health Ministry warns that the disease found in poultry, slaughter and death is not being used but must immediately notify the local authorities for timely handling, no shipping and selling of poultry of unknown origin, particularly especially in areas with outbreaks in poultry, ensure cooked, boiled drinking, washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet. Especially, when the symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath related to avian influenza, they must immediately go to the nearest medical facility to be examined and treated promptly.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy director of Tropical Disease Hospital Central Committee, said recently to the examination of patients with flu symptoms are many but not identified any cases of influenza A/H5N1 infection.
However, experts fear that the illness is very similar to the H1N1 influenza A/H5N1 (have lung damage due to acute respiratory distress syndrome), it is difficult to distinguish. While the risk of dying of influenza A/H5N1 is very high, so the patients who need to know the history of the patient to notify the treatment facility.
Patients with or without exposure to eat meat and poultry at risk before onset is considered the basic elements to distinguish influenza A/H1N1 and A/H5N1, A/H5N1 flu patients due mainly to spread from country bird flu H1N1 infection is also spread from person to person.
Dr Nguyen Tran Hien, the system of national influenza surveillance is maintained in the locality. Through the influenza virus isolated from clinical specimens is not currently see the genetic modification of influenza A/H5N1 virus in our country.
While the evaluation of experts, most cases of death from influenza A/H5N1 are subjective family brought to health facilities late, be very severe disease events, severe lung injury, not due to toxicity of strains of influenza A/H5N1 virus was altered.
88,000 livestock slaughtered as FMD spreads fast
December 07, 2010 | ||||
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is spreading at an alarming rate, with the number of infected farms increasing to 30 and with more than 88,000 animals slaughtered as of yesterday, according to government officials. All of the infected farms are still in North Gyeongsang. Health officials, nonetheless, are beefing up quarantine measures as a precaution. Meanwhile, suspicious cases of FMD that were reported on Sunday in Daegu, 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the initial outbreak area and Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang, 112 kilometers away, turned out to be negative. The area of concern still remains within a 30-kilometer radius of the epicenter - near Andong - with Yecheon, North Gyeongsang, marking the farthest spot the outbreak has reached, at 29 kilometers from the epicenter. Another farm in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang, reported symptoms of the disease in its cattle yesterday. The farm is about 30 kilometers from the epicenter. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has set up 298 quarantine posts nationwide, including 180 posts in Andong and its outskirts. As a precaution, the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service has secured vaccines for 300,000 livestock, while requesting raw materials for 3 million more vaccines from a U.K. pharmaceutical company. The government, though, is trying to refrain from using the vaccine, because it would lose its FMD-free status from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) for at least a year. The country lost its FMD-free status on Nov. 29 because of the confirmed FMD cases. South Korea employed the FMD vaccine in April 2000, when the virus first appeared in the country, and it took a more than a year to regain its FMD-free status. Sohn Han-mo, an official at the national veterinary service, said the export of animal products will be badly hurt if the vaccine is used. “We are stepping up every effort to establish a double and a triple quarantine zone.” |

Beware the risk of recurrence of avian influenza
(Chinhphu.vn) - Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Diep Kinh Tan noted, the increase in the slaughtering, transport and consumption of poultry big Lunar New Year is coming and the weather end of year cold, damp conditions will be for bird flu recurrence and spread.
Pm 7 / 12, at a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Avian Influenza Prevention (CGC), Deputy Minister Diep Kinh Tan suggested, should direct the Department of Animal Health fierce, focused treatment of points, not to epidemic spread, especially in the "Year to year end."
Proactive prevention
By the third week, the epidemic has appeared in three provinces of Nam Dinh, Nghe An and Ca Mau. Infection in poultry farms in Nam Dinh, Nghe An have been destroyed. Ca Mau Province is the latest bird flu appeared on 3 / 12 in the past three households in the Noble Village, Tan An Commune, Ngoc Hien district. We are implementing local measures for prevention as prescribed.
Thus the total number of infected flocks is now approximately over 2,500 children, all of which have been zoned and destruction.
According to DAH (MARD), avian influenza occurred in three provinces on the new outbreak signal. From the results of project monitoring data collection for the conversion of vaccination strategies highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Vietnam (Gets), the percentage of ducks with avian influenza virus in circulation average is 4, 2%, the risk of outbreaks continue to occur in local areas is very high. This shows that outbreaks can occur at any time.
The main reason given by the bird flu virus is still circulating among flocks of water birds may be vaccinated; cold weather complicated and reduce the resistance of poultry, to facilitate the virus exists, develop and spread in addition to the poultry operations increased consumer demand for year-end.
Fully vaccinated meaningful decisions
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Director General of Animal Husbandry, said although from 2009 to now, the epidemic has basically been controlled and now, new services appear only on a narrow range but the risk between now and Year Spectacular is very high, so can not be subjective and need to remind farmers and consumers proactive prevention.
According to Nguyen Thanh Son, this is the time to focus on direct inoculation at the highest rate. The risk of recurrent outbreaks in poultry usually from 100 to 200 children because of poor hygiene and animal health, vaccination has not been focused ..
Before the changes, past a row MARD has held two important meetings in order to direct prevention aggressively in Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta and Hong (Red River). In just over in November, has 11 of the directive to focus on prevention of poultry diseases.
Deputy Minister Diep Kinh Tan also noted that the Mekong Delta, Red River Delta are the two areas with a high rate of translation. Especially in Ca Mau province is always translated first appeared and then spread to other places. Therefore, the Veterinary Department should direct drastic SDAH concentration of Ca Mau province by treatment end point here is the Mekong Delta provinces of Ca Mau, which has started harvesting season, duck, is Conditions for high contagious epidemic. The press agencies need more communication to raise people's consciousness.
Besides, Vice Minister Diep Kinh Tan asked to consider and clarify the responsibilities of leadership in local conditions more favorable in the prevention but also in what happens to the disease. Even with the vaccine supply situation for some provinces are not used to expire. Deputy Minister Diep Kinh Tan Veterinary Affairs Department to coordinate with the provincial Animal Health Department survey, firm grasp of issues, from where to find the causes and take measures to thoroughly treated.
For foot and mouth epidemic, in three weeks, incurring additional services in 8 provinces, bringing the number of provinces with outbreaks in the country of 12 provinces. Translation occurs in two main areas are the northern mountainous provinces (Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Son La, Yen Bai, Bac Kan, Bac Ninh) and the Central Highlands (Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai).
According to DAH, outbreaks occur in two areas on the same period showed signs of epidemic spread by the movement of illegal livestock carriers appear to offer ..
Animal Husbandry Department Nguyen Thanh Son said that the most important reason is the vaccination rate is too low. In particular, two provinces in what is known as Son La and Nghe An. If given sufficient vaccine will be 100% control of foot and mouth epidemic.
Particularly with the blue ear disease, now epidemic has basically been controlled on a national scale, only two provinces of Dak Lak and Ca Mau outbreak. DAH that, in the coming weeks will be under control PRRS.
Avian Influenza reach back to Nepal
Yesterday, another Asian country, Nepal has announced detection of H5N1 avian influenza in commercial poultry. Last week the same problem was discovered in Japan - which, in reporting to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), only mentions that the highly pathogenic virus isolated in the country is H5.
The occurrence in Nepal - a small country sandwiched between China (north) and India (east, south and west) - is not exactly new, because it occurred in late October. But only on Monday (6), was reported to the OIE.
According to the Nepalese health authorities, the incident involved a commercial flock of about 11,500 birds, of which half percent confirmed infected with H5N1. All the remaining squad was subjected to sacrifice health. The work of disinfecting the affected farm was closed on October 30, not registering new cases thereafter.
According to the OIE, in late 2003 (when they first started appearing in the first cases of Avian Influenza in Southeast Asia) and the beginning of December, 2010, Nepal had recorded 10 different outbreaks. The announcement this week is the eleventh.
Add Ca Mau province has bird flu
(HNMO) - On 7-12, Veterinary Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) certified, avian influenza has appeared on the Ca Mau province, bringing the total number of localities in the country to offer three provinces.
According to the report of the Regional Veterinary VII, the last 2-12 days, at the Noble Hamlet, Tan An Commune, Ngoc Hien district (Ca Mau) has appeared the phenomenon of dead birds suspected of avian influenza. After conducting tests of dead birds, the results have identified the virus as H5N1 avian influenza virus. Veterinary existing agencies and local authorities are actively implementing measures for prevention as prescribed.
Thus, on the country, three provinces where bird flu 21 days, including Nam Dinh, Nghe An and Ca Mau. Besides, the 12 provinces of Dak Lak and Son La, Quang Ngai, Khanh Hoa, Gia Lai, Phu Yen, Bac Ninh, Yen Bai, Nghe An, Quang Ninh, Lang Son and Bac Kan have FMD in cattle may 21 days; four provinces of Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak province, Thanh Hoa and Ca Mau have PRRS in pigs.

The death toll from a strange disease that is devastating parts of
northern Uganda has now reached 38. Another 91 people are also
reported to be infected and suffering from the unknown disease, which
scientists from the Uganda Virus Research Institute are trying to
establish. A team of health experts has already been dispatched to
northern Uganda to monitor the situation, but also try and establish
the cause of the disease.
Ministry of Health officials said yesterday [4 Dec 2010] that
preliminary laboratory tests conducted by local and international
researchers have tested negative for the deadly Ebola, Marburg,
Crimean-Congo fever, Rift Valley fever and typhoid. "Further tests
are being run to identify the disease," said Dr Kenya Mugisha, the
director general of health services in the health ministry.
Dr Mugisha said the yet-to-be-established disease has, since 10 Nov
2010, been reported in the districts of Agago, Pader, Abim, Lamwo,
and Gulu. According to the Ministry of Health, the affected patients
complain of severe headache, dizziness, and a mild fever at the onset
and then progress with pain in the abdomen together with diarrhoea
and vomiting.
The general public has now been urged to avoid eating sick and dead
domestic animals, to observe personal hygiene including hand washing,
and to report suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

There are discrepancies in the reports about the new undiagnosed
disease in Uganda. The disease was 1st recognized in Northern Uganda
in Kitgum district. Now I read about the help of scientists from
Tanzania. This is strange, because Tanzania has a border with Uganda
in the south, not in the north. The next border in the north is
Southern Sudan. Here you can see that there are too many rumors in
Uganda. The high death rate in Kitgum is a fact.

[ProMED-mail thanks Dr Manfred Peters for this comment. The number of
cases and fatalities continues to rise, but confusion remains about
the cause and nature of the outbreak. The suggested diagnosis of
plague contained in the preceding report from the region is no longer
mentioned. Clarification of the situation in Northern Uganda is still
awaited. Forthwith, ProMED-mail will only post new reports from the
region when greater consistency is apparent.

Residents of Busanza Sub-county, Kisoro District, have appealed to the district leadership to come to their rescue and combat a swine fever attack in the area.
According to reports from the sub-county, swine fever which affects pigs, hit Gitovu Parish early September.
Gitovu’s community-based facilitator Robert Mbonimpa said around 30 pigs, some of them received under the NAADS programme, have so far died of the disease.
Falling prices

The mysterious disease that has devastated parts of Acholi and
Karamoja sub-regions for close to a month could be human plague.
Kitgum district LC5 chairman, John Komakech Ogwok, quoting sources
from the World Health Organisation, said on Friday evening [3 Dec
2010] that preliminary tests point at the plague. "Information from
the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that the strange disease
that has been disturbing us seems to be plague. But the tests have
ruled out Ebola or Marburg [haemorrhagic fevers] as had been widely
suspected by people here," he said.
Speaking during a book launch at the district council hall, Ogwok
said further tests were still being carried out to ascertain which of
the 3 types of plague [bubonic plague, septicemic plague, and
pneumonic plague] could be infecting the people. Human plague is
transmitted by fleas that move on rats and other rodents. The
symptoms are said to be similar to the ones associated with a strange
disease that broke out in Abim about a month ago and has now spread
to Agago, Kitgum, Lamwo and Pader districts. Those infected manifest
symptoms of headache, stomach-ache, bloody vomiting and diarrhoea and
also cases of blood seeping through most of the openings in the body.
The last known report of the human plague disease in Uganda was
reported in Arua District in 2004 and Nebbi in 2006.
Meanwhile, one more person in Kitgum, a 70-year-old man, died on
Thursday [2 Dec 2010] at St Joseph's Hospital from the mysterious
disease, bringing to 9 the total number of people who have died due
to the disease, and a total of 16 people infected, as of Friday [3 Dec 2010].

[The number of fatalities attributed to this still undiagnosed
disease has fluctuated from 36 on 29 Nov 2010, to 8 (approximately)
on 1 Dec 2010, 20 on 3 Dec 2010, and now 9 in the current report. The
only certainty at present is that this is not an outbreak of
Ebola/Marburg-like haemorrhagic fever. A previous suggestion that
amoebic dysentery was responsible appears to have been discarded and
replaced by information attributed to WHO suggesting that the disease
is plague, which has not been seen in Uganda since 2006.
On the basis of the limited descriptions of the disease so far
available, plague would seem an unlikely cause and a book launch a
curious venue to communicate the information. The plague that kills
is pneumonic, and there has been no description about cough
hemoptysis, etc. There is also no mention of buboes in others. For
these reasons, we will continue to carry this thread as undiagnosed
disease until there is official and verifiable confirmation of a diagnosis.
