Hong Kong confirmed a 2-year-old boy had contracted bird flu and placed hospitals in the Chinese territory on alert on Saturday.
However, Hong Kong Health Secretary York Chow — cited by RTHK — described the case as an isolated incident and urged the public not to panic.
The boy — a Hong Kong ID card holder — arrived from the southern Chinese city of Guangdong, where he lives, a week ago and was admitted to hospital with convulsions.
The Centre for Health Protection said he had tested positive for the AH5 strain of bird flu, according to the Herald Sun newspaper.
More tests were being conducted to determine whether it is the deadly H5N1 sub-strain of the virus, which has been responsible for 356 deaths since 2003, according to the World Health Organisation.
According to a statement put out by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the carcass of a dead crested Myrna — a common resident bird in Hong Kong — found on April 27 in the territory tested positive for the H5N1 virus.
The release quoted a department spokesman as reminding people to observe good personal hygiene.
"They should avoid personal contact with wild birds or live poultry and clean their hands thoroughly after coming into contact with them," he said.  http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/asia-pacific/china/120602/hong-kong-bird-flu-h5n1-china-hospitals-poultry-death

Biosecurity authorities have confirmed 2 horses have died in separate outbreaks of hendra virus in central and north Queensland. The properties near Rockhampton and at Ingham have been quarantined. Queensland Health staff are on their way to the 2 properties where it is understood a total of 4 people have had exposure to the sick horses.

In 2009, there was an outbreak at a Cawarral property near Rockhampton, where local vet Alistair Rodgers and several horses died. Last year [2011], hendra virus was detected at Hervey Bay, in northern Brisbane, and also on the Gold Coast.

A property south of Townsville was placed under quarantine after another outbreak in January [2012].

[Sadly, this virus just keeps cropping up. Last year (2011) seemed like the never-ending nightmare of Hendra virus and it does not seem to be regressing into its hiding place.

Horse owners please note that flying foxes are messy eaters. They dribble; they drool; they slobber. And for some reason the horses like to be right where they are eating their fruit. The juices, the bits of fruit must all be attractive to the horse. Please fence those fruit trees off from the horses.

We all hate to deprive our horses of the lovely trees and their shade, but I would rather give the horses a giant umbrella than I would have them acquire this horrible virus.

Sadly it also seems that there is little progress on the vaccine.

[Most of the added infected holdings since the previous update of 26 Apr 2012 (see 20120426.1115024) are attributed to the increase of SBV-related cases in cattle farms, as expected. In France, 206 new infected cattle holdings have been detected since 11 May 2012.

The German data on cases in roe deer are noteworthy. It will be interesting to obtain data on SBV and other orthobunyavirus- (e.g. Akabane) related congenital malformations in wildlife from other countries. Antibodies to Akabane virus have been found in the past in, besides large and small domestic ruminants, horses, donkeys, buffalo, deer, camels, and pigs. - Mod.AS]

DOLPHIN DIE-OFF - PERU (02): MORBILLIVIRUS, NOT

DOLPHIN DIE-OFF - PERU (02): MORBILLIVIRUS, NOT
Date: Wed 23 May 2012
Source: Kristv.com [edited]
http://www.kristv.com/news/cause-of-massive-dolphin-die-off-unknown

The mass die-off of nearly 900 dolphins and porpoises along Peru's coast remains unsolved, Peru's government marine research agency says.

Tuesday's [22 May 2012] final report by the Sea Institute ruled out viral and bacterial infections, human intervention, pesticides or heavy metals as causes for the deaths, which were 1st noticed on 7 Feb 2012 and continued through mid-April [2012]. It speculated that biotoxins, algae blooms, or an unknown emerging disease could be to blame.

The Peruvian environmental group Orca, which 1st alerted the public to the deaths, insists that seismic testing used in oil exploration was likely the cause.

But the institute said that experts found no evidence any of the deaths were a result of seismic soundings, which involve shooting compressed air at the sea floor: There were no signs of internal hemorrhages or brain lesions that would be compatible with damage from such tests. But it said it did notice damage to some plankton where the soundings were done.

Orca contested those findings in its own report on Tuesday [22 May 2012], saying it had independently confirmed hemorrhages and middle-ear infections as well as the presence of air bubbles in internal organs and severe lung damage.

Several leading Peruvian scientists complained that the government agency was late in gathering samples, making it harder to determine the cause of death because the tissue tested was so badly decomposed.

The Sea Institute based its findings on autopsies of just 2 dead dolphins, which were collected in mid-April [2012], while Orca said it gathered the 1st of the samples it tested on 12 Feb [2012].

Seismic testing in the area was conducted between 7 Feb and 8 Apr [2012] by Houston-based BPZ Energy.

The institute report said the testing occurred 50 to 80 miles (80 to 130 km) off shore and that the equipment used was calibrated in those waters between 31 Jan and 7 Feb [2012].

It said testing also ruled out morbillivirus, a type of distemper that some government officials had suggested as a likely cause long before kits arrived from the United States to check for it.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Updates

Milledgeville Man Continues To Fight Flesh-Eating Bacteria

12:58 PM, May 29, 2012Paul Bales, the Milledgeville man fighting the flesh-eating bacteria could face more surgery. 13WMAZ talked to Mike Bales, Paul's son, on Tuesday morning about his father's condition.
On Wednesday, Mike Bales says doctors removed part of his dad's left leg, just below the knee. Bales says the doctors are focused on getting the bacteria out.
"The surgeon came in this past weekend to observe the leg, change the dressing," said Mike Bales in a phone interview. "They still see signs of redness and infection around the knee area, and possibly more amputation because there's even more infection."
Bales said..

Family counters flesh-eating bacteria with faith

By Elizabeth Cohen, Senior Medical Correspondent
updated 2:41 PM EDT, Tue May 29, 2012(CNN) -- In the four weeks since his daughter cut her leg in the Tallapoosa River, Andy Copeland has experienced several low points. But nothing was as desperate as a moment in the surgical waiting room on May 4.
A doctor called from the operating room at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Georgia, where his daughter was having surgery.
"When your daughter arrived, I was trying to save her leg," the doctor said. "Now I'm trying to save her life.'"
Copeland felt his legs turn to rubber. His head went light. A hospital volunteer put a chair beneath him that caught him from falling. His wife, Donna, came into the room, and Andy repeated what the surgeon had told him.
"We cried and cried in each other's arms," Copeland recalled. "We sobbed uncontrollably for 10 minutes. Then the chaplain came in and I grabbed his hand and....

Expert: 'Bacteria shouldn't be feared, but it should be respected'
by Winston Jones/Times-Georgian

Microbiologist Amy Horneman often calls the Aeromonas bacteria, “the Rodney Dangerfield of bacteria.”

The late stand-up comedian Dangerfield’s famous line was, “I don’t get no respect.”

Horneman said people shouldn’t live in fear of Aeromonas, but it does deserve their respect. She should know since she is considered the international expert on the germ.

It was a strain of this bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, that caused the flesh eating disease, necrotizing faciitis, that nearly killed 24-year-old University of West Georgia psychology graduate student Aimee Copeland. She received a cut from a May 1 zip line accident in the Little Tallapoosa River. Copeland is still recovering in the JMS Burn Center of Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

While Horneman won’t speak specifically on the Copeland case, she has become in extreme demand in recent weeks due to the Copeland infection making worldwide news. Horneman has been on many radio and TV networks and has been quoted worldwide in many publications. When the Times-Georgian got in contact with her last Thursday, she was preparing to appear on an outdoors network to warn fishermen of the dangers of Aeromonas infection from fishhook wounds.
Speaking from her...

Hendra virus fears as 11 people exposed

by: Rosanne Barrett From:The Australian

ELEVEN people at two Queensland properties have been exposed to the potentially fatal Hendra virus in the first outbreaks of the "high-risk" winter period as scientists await approval for the "emergency use" of a new horse vaccine.
Authorities yesterday conducted health assessments on the owners and treating veterinarians of two horses that died after contracting the deadly flying fox-borne disease in separate cases more than 800km apart.
Officials also assessed other horses, cats and dogs on the properties where the horses died -- one in the far north Queensland town of Ingham on Sunday and the other outside central Queensland's Rockhampton on Saturday. Quarantine exclusion zones were established.
Queensland chief veterinary officer Rick Symons warned that the state was entering the "high-risk" Hendra period, but said the virus could occur any time throughout the year, citing a case in Townsville in January...
