Police and veterinary officials in Banteay Meanchey province on Wednesday seized 300 chickens and ducks that had been imported from Thailand and were suspected to be infected with H5N1, an official said.

The poultry had entered the province through the Robeang O’Beichoan border post and were being held at the provincial veterinary office while some were tested for the virus, said Pang Vannasedh, deputy director of the Banteay Meanchey Department of Agriculture.

China: 16,000 pigs recovered in Shanghai rivers

3/22/13
The number of dead pigs recovered in the last two weeks from rivers that supply water to Shanghai has risen to more than 16,000.

The government in China's financial hub said Thursday that 10,570 carcasses have been pulled from its Huangpu river. That is in addition to 5,528 pigs plucked from upstream tributaries in the Jiaxing area of Zhejiang province, AP reports.

Authorities give daily updates assuring the public that tests show Shanghai's water is safe, but no official has given any full explanation about the massive dumping of pig carcasses.

Hog farmers have told state media that the dumping of swine carcasses is rising because police have started cracking down on the illicit sale of pork products made from dead, diseased pigs.
The state-controlled Southern Weekly newspaper, citing court documents, said three men were sentenced to life prison in Jiaxing last November for procuring dead pigs to sell their meat. It says the men and their group purchased and slaughtered 77,000 dead pigs in a period of more than two years.

Local officials also told Southern Weekly that the city lacks enough facilities to properly dispose of dead pigs. Hog farming is a major business in Jiaxing.

China: 231 Dead Pigs Taken from Huangpu River Yesterday...

3/22/13
THE number of dead pigs plucked out of the Huangpu River in Shanghai was 231 yesterday, a drop of 37.4 percent from Tuesday's haul, city government spokesman Xu Wei said.
That brought the total number of carcasses to 10,395 since they were first discovered floating in the river in Songjiang District about two weeks ago.
The Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau has been strictly monitoring the river upstream to keep pig carcasses from floating down, Xu said.
All the dead pigs fished out yesterday were sent to an incineration center in Fengxian District.
Water authorities said they have strengthened monitoring of water quality and increased the amount of powdered activated carbon used to disinfect the water taken from affected areas. The tap water quality is up to the national standards, Xu said.
To ensure safety, the industrial and commercial watchdogs inspected 1,317 pork retailers. No below-standard pork product was found on sale in the market.

Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae CRE

On March 5, this report was posted as an MMWR Early Release on the MMWR website (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr).

Abstract

Among Enterobacteriaceae, resistance to broad-spectrum carbapenem antimicrobials has been uncommon. Over the past decade, however, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have been recognized in health-care settings as a cause of difficult-to-treat infections associated with high mortality.
