TOYAMA, Dec. 18, 2010 (Kyodo News International) -- Officials of Toyama Prefecture are conducting a further investigation into suspected cases of avian influenza infection after a swan was spotted swimming feebly Saturday at a park where two swans were found dead earlier in the week.

The influenza season 2010-11 in Europe has started with increasing
transmission in 11 countries [1]. The currently circulating strains
are predominantly the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) and influenza B
viruses [1], strains that are included in the current trivalent
seasonal influenza vaccine.
The United Kingdom (UK), so far the most
affected country, has seen a number of outbreaks. Although the
majority of cases in the UK are mild, a significant number of severe
hospitalised cases and several deaths have occurred, some in patients
belonging to risk groups, including pregnant women [2]. This has
resulted in an increased demand for intensive care treatment and
respiratory support including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
(ECMO). Most patients are under 65 years of age.
In the past, epidemics have most often progressed from west to east in
Europe [3]. There is a rapidly closing window of time during which
public health and clinical interventions can mitigate the impact of
this season's influenza epidemics on morbidity and mortality.
Countries should be prepared for increased demand for healthcare
assistance and promote early sample collection and testing for
patients with influenza-like-illness.
Influenza vaccination with the 2010 trivalent seasonal influenza
vaccine is the most effective prevention measure and is recommended in
particular for those at risk of developing severe disease [4]. There
is strong evidence suggesting that the A(H1N1) component of the
seasonal vaccine will be highly effective against influenza-like
illness caused by the pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus. Good
protection was achieved as early as 8 days after vaccination [5].
Early use of antiviral drugs for individuals belonging to risk groups
will also be of value. The currently circulating variant can be
expected to be sensitive to oseltamivir and zanamivir, as the old
oseltamivir-resistant influenza A(H1N1) virus has been displaced by
the pandemic strain, and very few viruses so far have been reported as
being resistant [6]. However, isolates should be monitored for the
emergence of antiviral resistance, particularly in immunocompromised
patients.

50 cadets at the IDF's [Israel Defense Force] Officer Training School
-- known as Bahd 1 -- were diagnosed on Thursday [16 Dec 2010] with
swine flu [influenza A/(H1N1) virus infection].
The soldiers, who were staying at Har Gilo for an education seminar,
complained in recent days of flu-like symptoms, and after being tested
were found to all be sick with H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu
[influenza A/(H1N1) virus infection].
The IDF Medical Corps has launched an investigation to locate the
source of the flu in the IDF.

New influenza (H1N1) virus infection cases have been detected in
Yemen, raising fears the pandemic could strike again after its end
early this year [2010] was not so clear.
The News Yemen [website] quoted sources at a private hospital as
saying that 9 people were admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with
influenza (H1N1) virus infection in early November [2010]. Four of the
9 have died so far, the website said, but did not publish the name of
the hospital.
The National H1N1 Monitoring and Surveillance Commission said it had
received reports about the cases, adding: "We called the commission,
but it did not confirm or deny H1N1 cases had been detected in the
country."
The hospital contacted the commission over the cases, but it was told
to keep them secret while Yemen was preparing for hosting the 20th
Gulf Soccer Cup, it said.
The commission also visited the infected and supplied the hospital
with necessary medications, the sources were quoted as saying.

[In the case of the outbreak in Yemen, it is likely that the H1N1
virus detected is the influenza A/(H1N1) 2009 pandemic strain rather
than the previously circulating seasonal H1N1 strain. The final match
of the 20th Gulf Soccer Tournament (between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia)
was held before a crowd of 55 000 fans in Aden on Sun 5 Dec 2010, so,
presumably, the patients had been hospitalised and diagnosed with H1N1
influenza prior to that date, and the information has only now been
released. The HealthMap/ProMED-mail interactive map of Yemen can be

It is clear that the influenza season is now upon us in parts of

However, isolates should be monitored for the
emergence of antiviral resistance, particularly in immunocompromised
patients.

#Uganda (Moyo)- African Swine Fever
Date: Mon 13 Dec 2010
Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda) [edited]
Authorities in Moyo District have banned transportation of pigs out of
the district following an outbreak of African swine fever. The
authorities have also banned the sale of pork in the district.
According to the acting district veterinary officer, Dr Richard Akule,
the ban is aimed at reducing further spread, especially from Southern
Sudan and also from neighbouring districts.
Dr Akule said some people have started drying the condemned meat in
some of the villages. "I know pigs are a source of livelihood to many
so others could not report such cases to us, we found others smoking
the condemned meat," he said. A farmer in Kendi village who has lost 5
of his pigs, says his revenue income would be reduced. "5 pigs are a
lot because piggery is my major source of income. I think government
should help us to vaccinate the animals," [he] said. So far, at least
150 pigs have reportedly died following the outbreak of the disease a
week ago.
The disease is ravaging 8 villages in Moyo Sub-county and Moyo Town
Council. African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that is
normally fatal especially in pigs. It is transmitted through direct
contact with infected animals. Symptoms of the disease include fever,
inactivity, and loss of appetite. The abdomen and ventral chest may
present blue and red discoloration.
Depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, and uncoordinated movement are
some of the signs and symptoms that infected pigs will show. Dr Akule
advised farmers to monitor their animals for symptoms and inform
authorities on time.
At the moment, the movement of pigs, pork, and other pig products
from, to, and within the district is prohibited until further notice.
Similar quarantine was imposed in the district in June this year
[2010] and only lifted after the disease burden had subsided.

The government reported 2 additional cases of foot-and-mouth disease
(FMD) at pig farms north of Seoul on Wednesday [15 Dec 2010], fueling
worries over a nationwide spread of the disease that was first
reported in a city located hundreds of kilometers south of the capital.
The additional cases were confirmed at farms in Yangju
[<http://healthmap.org/r/0i_6>] and Yeoncheon
[<http://healthmap.org/r/0i_5>], according to the Ministry of Food,
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. "The farms have about 1200 pigs
each and are owned by the same farmer," it said.
The outbreak of the animal disease was first reported 29 Nov 2010 at 2
pig farms in Andong, a city located 270 km [168 mi] southeast of Seoul.
The cases in Yangju and Yeoncheon, both north of Seoul, mark the 1st
cases of the disease outside of North Gyeongsang Province.
So far, South Korea has reported 48 suspected cases of FMD, 32 of
which have been confirmed positive [in fact, 33 confirmed outbreaks
had been officially notified to OIE up to 11 Dec 2010. - Mod.AS]
The government is further stepping up its quarantine efforts, already
having destroyed nearly 98 percent of more than 152 000 animals
subject to culling, according to the ministry.
South Korea stayed clear of the animal disease from 2002 until the
beginning of this year [2010]. The disease affects all cloven-hoofed
animals, including cows, sheep, and deer. Countries affected by the
disease are barred from exporting meat from animals with cloven hoofs
though the disease does not affect humans.

[The spread of FMDV serotype O (most likely topotype SEA, strain
Mya-98, which was responsible for the earlier 2010 outbreak in South
Korea as well as the major 2010 epizootic in Japan) into 2 separate
locations, Yeoncheon County ("Yeoncheon-gun") and Yangju city, both in
Gyeonggi Province (more than 250 km [155 mi] north west of the
infected area in North Gyeongsang province), is a cause for grave
concern. This concern is accentuated by the involvement of pigs in
large numbers on these 2 farms: pigs are known to be prolific emitters
of the FMD virus, able to enhance its short-distance -- as well as, in
certain climatic conditions, long-distance -- airborne spread,
exposing susceptible animals (particularly cattle) to infection.
The initial outbreaks in the south east (Andong, late November 2010)
and the current outbreaks north of Seoul, started on pig farms; since
pigs are readily infected by the oral route, the possibility of animal
feed (such as swill) as a source of introduced or extended infection
deserves to be investigated.
Gyeonggi-do is the most populous province in South Korea. Seoul, South
Korea's largest city and national capital, is located in the heart of
the province, but is separately administered as a 'provincial-level
special city'.
