The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced five new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection.
The first case is a 53 year-old male from Shobra Elkhima district, Qaliobia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 27 February and was hospitalized on 27 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a critical condition.
The second case is a 1 year-old male from Banha district, Qaliobia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 22 February and was hospitalized on 23 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a stable condition.
The third case is a 10 year-old male from Meet Ghamr district, Dakalia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 14 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a moderate condition.
The fourth case is a 30 year-old female from Kellin District, Kafr El-Sheik Governorate. She developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 11 February, where she received oseltamivir treatment. She is in stable condition.
The fifth case is a 13 year-old male from Kafr El-Sheik District, Kafr El-Sheik Governorate. He developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 14 February where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in stable condition.
Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the five cases had exposure to sick and dead poultry.
The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).
Of the 104 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 30 have been fatal.

Hong Kong: Vigilance against seasonal influenza urged
Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (March 4) called on members of the public to take precautionary measures against seasonal influenza. A CHP spokesman said the centre had been closely monitoring influenza activity. The latest surveillance data showed an apparent increase in seasonal influenza activity in the community.
The average consultation rate for influenza-like-illness (ILI) among sentinel private doctors rose from 42.8 per 1,000 consultations in the week ending February 20 to 55.1 in the week ending February 27. In the same period, the number of patients with fever/respiratory symptoms attending Designated Flu Clinics also increased from 410 to 704. The CHP recorded 28 ILI outbreaks in institutions affecting at least 154 persons in the first five days (February 28 - March 4) of the current week.
Influenza virus isolation in the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Centre (PHLC) also indicated a rise, the spokesman said. The PHLC recorded 85 influenza detections last week (February 21 to 27) compared with 44 influenza detections from February 14 to 20. Among the 85 influenza viruses isolated last week, the majority were influenza B virus (63.5%) while human swine influenza (HSI) virus accounted for 22.4% and influenza A (H3N2) virus about 1% of all isolates.
The currently used seasonal influenza vaccine for the 2009-2010 northern hemisphere influenza season is expected to confer certain cross protection against this influenza B virus. The winter influenza season in Hong Kong usually occurs during February and March. "More data over the coming one to two weeks will be needed to show more definitively that Hong Kong is entering the winter influenza season.
We will closely monitor the situation," the spokesman said. He added that as a preventive measure, the CHP will send letters to doctors, schools and institutions alerting them to the current influenza situation and provide advice on prevention and control. The spokesman reminded members of the public to take the following measures to prevent influenza and other respiratory illnesses: *Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking; *Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene; *Wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose; *Maintain good ventilation; and *Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation.
People, particularly young children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop influenza-like symptoms.

About 20 cases of mutation of the H1N1 influenza virus resistant to the antiviral oseltamivir, as detected in Mexico, have also been staged in other countries and are likely being reported here, warned the Health Ministry (SSA). South Koreans visiting Vietnam are being asked to stay away from any chickens or other poultry. The government said the moves were triggered by the death last week of a 38-year-old Vietnamese woman, that country’s first H5N1-related fatality and second case in 2010. Bird flu outbreak strikes Khanh Hoa
HA NOI — A fresh outbreak of avian flu (A/H5N1) has been reported in central Khanh Hoa Province, killing nearly 10,000 birds.
Affected areas have been decontaminated and poultry incinerated, said a spokesperson from the provincial Animal Health Unit.
The latest outbreak has brought the number of provinces affected by the flu to six: Dien Bien, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa, Soc Trang and Ca Mau, said Hoang Van Nam from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The bird flu epidemic has continued to spread in these provinces, killing thousands of poultry since it re-emerged last December despite efforts to prevent contagion.
Last December, nearly 6,000 birds were contaminated with A/H5N1 in southernmost Ca Mau Province alone. Infections spread to two more communes of the province this week, causing 600 affected birds to be culled and raising the total number of affected communes to ten.
There is a high risk of the flu spreading to other localities, especially in the Mekong Delta region as ducks migrated during harvest time, said Nam.
The ministry urged the provinces to increase efforts to combat and prevent the spread of the flu, and ensure more monitoring of transportation and poultry slaughterhouses, he added.
