Bangladesh destroys 140,000 birds, eggs after flu virus detection since November #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

16:19, February 01, 2012

DHAKA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's authorities destroyed nearly 140,000 birds and eggs until last month since mid November when this season's first outbreak of bird flu was detected, an official said Wednesday.

Ataur Rahman, assistant director at the control room of Bangladesh's Fisheries and Live Stock Department, told Xinhua that "Some 67,327 birds, including 12,714 at the latest on Tuesday, were culled in about a dozen flu-hit farms since the middle of November last year."

During the same period, he said, "A total of 69,390 eggs were also destroyed."
An official had earlier said risky factors of bird flu disease usually rise with the fall in temperature during January and February in Bangladesh which is considered a high-risk country with respect to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) as the South Asian nation of over 160 million people is especially vulnerable to virus perpetuation because of insufficient biosecurity, rearing of chickens and ducks together, selling of live birds, and deficient disease surveillance.

Bangladesh's poultry farmers during winter season in 2009 and 2010 had suffered to some extent from the outbreak of the disease. The disease was first detected in Bangladesh in a poultry farm near capital Dhaka in March 2007. The situation deteriorated later on as the virus spread fast across the country which was reported in 47 districts between December 2007 and March 2008.  http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90782/90880/7717135.html

Bird Flu: More surveillance underway

Saturday, January 14, 2012
(Bird flu update) Following the outbreak of bird flu in Changedaphu, popularly known as Kala Bazaar, medicines are being distributed to the people who came in contact with the dead poultry birds and their products. More surveillance is being conducted within three kilometre radius of the area.
Over 90 people have come in contact with the dead birds.
The officials from health and livestock have given health education and have disinfected the place.
The coops were being dismantled and sprayed with disinfectant. It was then burned to prevent the bird flu from spreading. The people, those who have consumed the dead and sick birds are being given Tami flu, the only drug available to treat this flu.
The Technical Focal Person for Avian influenza, Dr. Gosar Pemba, said that they took the samples from those people who were showing some signs of the disease. India-State to cull 35k birds in Keranga #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

State to cull 35k birds in Keranga

BHUBANESWAR: Around 35,000 poultry birds would soon be culled in Keranga area of Khurda district. The Odisha government decided this on Wednesday evening following confirmation of existence of bird flu virus in the area three days ago.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik gave his nod in favour of culling of hens and ducks in 19 villages within three km radius of the epicentre of the dreaded disease basing upon an advisory from the Centre, official sources said. Though the government had resorted to culling in 2005, 2006 and 2008 in different parts of the state, bird flu was detected in the state for the first time in Keranga.

"We have ordered the Khurda district administration to begin culling with immediate effect," secretary, fisheries and animal resources development, Satyabrata Sahu said. "We have estimated that around 35,000 birds would be eliminated," he told TOI. He said rapid response teams have been formed and surveillance increased to overcome the challenges posed by bird flu.

Official sources said domesticated fowls as well as those living in a big poultry farm in Keranga would be killed. The government would compensate the bird owners at the following rates: Rs 70 for each layer bird (big size) and Rs 30 for each layer bird (small); Rs 60 for each broiler bird (big) and Rs 30 for each broiler bird (small); Rs 75 for each duck (big) and Rs 35 for duck (small); Rs two each for an egg and Rs six for each kg for bird feed.

The government also stopped movement of poultry products into Keranga, thus depriving schoolchildren of eggs under the Midday Meal Scheme there. Official sources said around 300 birds were reported dead in Keranga, spreading panic in the area. While the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory of Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bhopal, confirmed a sample each of hen and duck with H5N1 virus which causes bird flu or avian influenza on Sunday, the laboratory confirmed the virus in a crow sample on Wednesday, official sources added, adding, 562 samples of crows and poultry birds from across the state have been sent to Bhopal for tests.

With crows in hundreds being found dead in different parts of Odisha, including Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, experts are at a loss on how to cope with the situation. Crows being wild birds can neither be vaccinated nor killed, but are capable of spreading the disease, an expert pointed out.

Agitated and panicked over the detection of bird flu, some people in Keranga damaged a part of a big farm housing around 20,000 poultry birds and also took away some fowls, police said.  http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhubaneswar/State-to-cull-35k-birds-in-Keranga/articleshow/11452512.cms

Dr Javed Akram also advised the Zoo administration to adopt safety measures for the rest of the birds and the workers as well. He said special protective masks should be provided to the workers and they should also be advised to wash hands each time they deal with the birds.

"This is a warning. The concern over possible human-to-human spread has appeared. I have received such information informally," said Suswono.
Despite there was no any mass bird-flu case on poultry or cattle, the minister had ordered to impose a precaution measure.

"We keep monitoring the viruses as part of our alertness on bird flu. I have ordered officials to persistently conduct surveillance. And we ask people don't be reluctant to report any animal or poultry sudden death or the person himself or herself being sick," he said at the State Palace.

Indonesia had been hit the hardest by bird flu years ago with more than 100 fatalities, but then the spread of the viruses has been slow.

Deputy Health Minister Ali Gufron said that the government had set up task force teams to face the threat and hospitals had been prepared.

Spread of avian influenza culprit: famous birds or poultry #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

Spread of avian influenza culprit: famous birds or poultryWelcome to comment 02012 at 08:26 on January 7

"Things are not so terrible." When "China Science News" correspondent on 6 January by researchers with the Institute of Microbiology, Shenzhen about drivers who report a case of bird flu, researchers say it is dull.In their eyes, every year people were killed in bird flu, no fuss, not to mention large-scale outbreaks. However, as Shenzhen drivers are actually infected poultry or infected by migratory birds, may be a never shrouded in mystery.

Transmission of avian influenza is very strange. According to the associate researcher Liu Di Jieshao, outbreaks of avian flu since 2005, the Institute of Microbiology Chinese Academy of Sciences of the high-Fu group and the Northwest Plateau Institute of Biology Li Hing group, has begun to track migratory birds traces of bird flu has not stopped. 2012, at the beginning of the cold Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, migratory birds has not yet arrived, they temporarily can not obtain data fashion.

Task Force in 2005, an outbreak of avian flu, do migratory birds in Qinghai Lake to find a highly pathogenic virus H5N1, 2006 年 also isolated a lot. By 2007, the migratory birds at Qinghai Lake, the bird flu virus is relatively small, almost disappeared in 2008. However, in 2009 and 2010, another group of fish in the lake gulls, brown-headed gulls and cormorants and other H5N1 viruses isolated from migratory birds at a new branch Clade2.3.2. Vietnam reported the virus and the avian flu virus is very similar.

Task Force co-operation with the Russian researchers found that this virus has been spread to migratory birds in Mongolia and parts of Russia."Clade2.3.2 and Clade2.3.4 branch of poultry in Asia in recent years, the distribution is relatively common in the inland provinces of Hunan, China, Hong Kong and Japan, Vietnam and others have the virus isolates, including poultry in Qinghai is also a performance. So in the end who is the bird flu virus to the birds? "group asked.

If the poultry is infected migratory birds in Qinghai, the Qinghai virus in poultry come from?If it is not spread through the poultry, then what kind of birds brought the virus to Qinghai?Through analysis, research group that birds directly to the interior of the virus with China is unlikely to Qinghai. Speculated that most likely is that the Mainland carrying the virus in poultry in Qinghai, Qinghai infected poultry, poultry and migratory birds in Qinghai were infected. Of course not rule out migratory birds infected with the virus from abroad, which led to the possibility of an outbreak in Qinghai Lake area. But there are a lack of direct evidence. It is understood that the migratory birds carrying avian flu found in Qinghai, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan virus researchers, has on the Dongting Lake, Poyang Lake and other waters sampled, there are also isolated from the waters of the avian influenza virus subtype H10N8.Liu Zhai said: "This indicates that migratory birds and poultry carrying the virus may cause environmental pollution, and the existence of the environment as the media led to the spread of avian influenza virus may be."Many people have seen, the current number of waters in the South, poultry and migratory birds fighting for food scene, no one knows the original sin of avian flu.Despite the complexity of transmission of avian influenza, but Chinese scientists did not give up track. In 2010, the national "973 Plan" project the use of genetic models to predict the geographical space the spread of H5N1 avian influenza virus and control strategy. The study hopes to build a massive database analysis, the use of public resources for the database of nucleic acid and protein sequence comparison of the search for potential point mutations meaningful; and build the H5N1 reverse genetics experiment platform, get to deal with H5N1 virus; the same time, save the virus by the cellular industry zoology experimental validation, analysis of the spread of the virus in animals force and virulence.Currently, high-welfare group has the structure of the avian flu virus has been successfully resolved."China Science News" (2012-01-07   http://tech.hexun.com/2012-01-07/137034216.html

Bird flu panic in NE Indian state of Agartala #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

Bird flu panic in NE Indian state of Agartala
New Delhi, Jan 5, IRNA -- Alarm was raised over a possible outbreak of bird flu in Tripura, capital of India's northeastern state Agartala, following the death of more than 600 poultry in Dhalai district of the state in the past three days.

Blood samples of infected chickens have been collected for test, while antidote was administered to other fowls to arrest the spread of the virus, PTI news agency quoted officials as saying in its report.

Tripura was first hit by bird flu in 2008 when 50,000 birds were culled at Mohanpur and in neighbouring areas, about 50 km from Agartala.

Bird flu is flu infection in birds. The virus that causes the bird infection can change (mutate) to infect humans. Such mutation could start a deadly worldwide epidemic.

The first avian influenza virus to infect humans occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. The epidemic was linked to chickens and classified as avian influenza A (H5N1).

Symptoms of avian flu infection in humans depend on the strain of virus. Infection with the H5N1 virus in humans causes typical flu-like symptoms, which might include cough, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, high fever, headache, malaise muscle aches runny nose and sore throat.

In general, treatment with the anti-viral medication oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) may make the disease less severe if you start taking the medicine within 48 hours after your symptoms start.

Oseltamivir may also be prescribed for persons who live in the same house as those diagnosed with avian flu.
