Imports of SK beef, pork, chicken banned at biz complex

JANUARY 11, 2011 09:17
With food-and-mouth disease and bird flu spreading in South Korea, North Korea banned the import of South Korean pork, beef and chicken at the Kaesong industrial complex, said the Unification Ministry in Seoul Monday.

North Korean quarantine officials banned late last month South Korean pork and beef used in meals for workers at the complex. Also halted was South Korean poultry in November last year in the wake of the bird flu outbreak in the South.

A source at a company operating in the complex said, “Meat sent from South Korea was used to prepare soup and dishes for South and North Korean workers at our plant. But due to the North Korean authority’s ban, we are making side dishes with fish balls, tofu and fried Alaska pollack.”

The North has sensitively responded to outbreaks of infectious disease in livestock and poultry in the South due to its weak quarantine capacity stemming from economic hardship. Pyongyang halted South Korean pork and beef imports in January last year, citing the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the South, but lifted the ban in October.

Amid the global outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, in 2003, the North banned entry and departure of foreign nationals.

Seoul is reportedly discussing with Pyongyang the North’s import of pork, beef and chicken from other countries like Australia.

Deaths of thousands of birds, pigeons in Italy for some unknown reason

2011 Date: January 9, 2011

Check the Italian forest police and health authorities in the town of Faenza province of Bologna in the north of the country causes the death of more than ‬ 4 thousands of birds, pigeons in the town during the first week of this year, ‬ 2010.

The news agency quoted medical sources as Italian it was in «tests to see if the cause of mass deaths of birds caused by a virus present in the atmosphere or poisoning for other reasons and the possibility of transmission of this case of the human person».

A number of citizens, they saw a bird falling from the sky like a «raining dead birds».

Said Dr. Matthew Frazinelli of forest police that «being biological studies, biological and food», he said, adding that work is underway on a large scale to verify the existence of some of the viruses or bacteria or any other toxic substances such as certain types of pesticides.

He noted that there is another possibility, namely that the birds ate some harmful elements such as sunflower seeds, which lead to serious side effects it has led to death.

UK: GPs could be stripped of flu vaccine ordering powers, hints Cameron

GPs could be stripped of their powers to order flu vaccines after this season's problems over shortages, the Prime Minister indicated yesterday (SUN).

By Stephen Adams, Medical Correspondent
09 Jan 2011

The matter needed to be looked at because Britain could be hit by "significant outbreaks" in future winters, Mr Cameron said.

His comments come after widespread problems throughout England emerged last week in obtaining the seasonal flu vaccine.

The situation south of the border is in contrast to that in Scotland, where the Scottish government orders a back-up supply. It currently has a small surplus.

Mr Cameron admitted that there were "some shortages in some places", only days after the Department of Health had insisted that there was "no national shortage".

He conceded it was "very important that we learn the lessons" from this season's outbreak, which is known to have claimed the lives of 50 people so far. Thirteen of the victims have been under 15 years of age and all but four have been under 65.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5, Mr Cameron said: "I think one of the lessons is that it looks likely that, because of the prevalence of swine flu and other strains, we might have quite significant outbreaks in future years."

He went on: "We need to look at the way we order vaccinations and whether more needs to be done."

In England and Wales it is up to GPs to order seasonal flu vaccine, which they do from the manufacturers or wholesalers.

They order more than six months in advance, based on uptake of the vaccine in previous years and guidance from the Department of Health on the "at-risk" groups they should target. This gives the manufacturers enough time to make enough vaccine, which has a six month lead time.

The theory is that GPs are best placed to order the right number, as they know the populations they serve the best.

However, the intensity of this winter's outbreak - with the highest peak in seasonal cases for a decade - has led to increased demand for the seasonal flu vaccine since Christmas.

In Scotland, pharmacists order on behalf of GPs, while the Scottish government orders in an extra amount as well. On Friday it had 40,000 doses remaining, although rates of infection are lower there.

But Dr Clare Gerada, chairman of thr Royal College of GPs, dismissed the idea of centrally ordering flu vaccines.

She said: "I can't see how any system that claims to be centrally run, could be more accurate that 10,000 practices each estimating what they require.

"I can't for the life of me see how a national system could be more accurate than that."

Last Thursday, the Department of Health announced it would be resorting to the 12.7 million-strong stockpile of swine flu vaccine left over from the 2009 pandemic, to bolster supplies. Doses of the Pandemrix vaccine, which only protect against the H1N1 virus and not two other important strains, are currently being distributed to surgeries.

In his interview Mr Cameron also said he had not had the seasonal flu vaccine this winter, because he was not in one of the "at-risk" groups.

He said: "That's the most important thing, is people in the at-risk groups and the over-65s get those flu jabs."

A source close to Mr and Mrs Cameron also disclosed that their children Nancy, six, Arthur, four, and Florence, four months, had not received the jab either.

A spokesman for the Department of Health confirmed that a review of how flu vaccines were purchased was underway.

She said: "The Department of Health each year routinely assesses performance over the flu season in order to provide the NHS with the best possible guidance for the following season.

"We have already said that we are reviewing specifically the need for central procurement of vaccines. This review will report in due course."

Meanwhile, the Shadow Health Secretary has challenged the Coalition to publish figures on how many pregnant women have died of flu this season.

In a letter to Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, John Healey said there was "no justification" for keeping the number secret.

Last summer pregnant women were added to the list of "at-risk" people who should have the seasonal flu jab, after a study showed they were twice as likely to die of swine flu in the 2009 as the population as a whole.

The Health Protection Agency has refused to give numbers of deaths this season, saying that doing so could lead to them being identified.

UK: Elderly And Flu Concerns

2 Articles:
Second wave of flu puts the elderly at risk
By Stephen Adams, Medical Correspondent
08 Jan 2011

A second flu wave could emerge in the coming weeks, this time hitting elderly people, figures suggest.
While data released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) disclose that flu cases appear to have peaked among the young, they also show that infection rates among older age groups are continuing to rise.

Last night a flu expert warned elderly people who had not had the seasonal flu jab to contact their doctors, amid signs that two strains of the virus which have been relatively quiet so far this winter could be about to take a stronger hold.

GPs' surgeries are already running out of vaccine and manufacturers have warned they have no more stock.

Last night Scotland's leading microbiologist, Hugh Pennington, described the swine flu vaccination system in England as "a shambles".

"I blame both the GPs and the Government," he said. "The GPs could have got their ordering better – everybody knew this was coming. The advertising campaign left a lot to be desired. In Scotland we have been better prepared but we could have done more."

Prof John Oxford, a flu expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said the swine flu strain (H1N1) which has hit young people the hardest could be on the wane, allowing for this winter's two other major strains, H3N2 and B, to take hold.

Both are potentially more dangerous to older people who have greater resistance to swine flu than the young due to exposure to similar viruses earlier in their lives. So far 50 people are known to have died from flu this season. Only four have been aged 65 or over.

Of the deaths, 45 were due to swine flu and the other five, type B. The HPA could not say whether the four deaths in over-65s were due to type B flu.

Weekly flu statistics from the Royal College of GPs (RCGP), released on Thursday, show that while infection rates in younger age groups appear to be falling fast, they are rising among those aged 45 and over. Rates of the illness among children aged five to 14 fell from 145 cases per 100,000 to 58 cases, in the week to Jan 2. In those aged 65 or over cases rose from 36 to 47.

New flu jabs will not protect the elderly

Millions of flu jabs being rushed out to plug vaccine shortfalls will not protect the elderly against a strain of the virus now putting them at increased risk, experts have warned.

By Laura Donnelly, Health Correspondent
08 Jan 2011

A national stockpile of more than 12 million swine flu jabs left over from the 2009 pandemic will be released on Monday, in a bid to combat local shortages of flu vaccines.

But influenza experts claim that the stocks, which protect only against swine flu, will do almost nothing to protect elderly people, who are at far greater risk from another strain of flu – type B – which is now rising sharply.

On Saturday health officials issued a warning that type B flu had reached "substantial" proportions in London, while lab reports show that it has become more common than swine flu across central and southern England.

Latest figures show that although swine flu currently remains dominant nationally, the increase in type B cases has been almost double that of swine flu in recent weeks, while overall influenza levels among the over-65s are rising sharply.

This year's seasonal flu jab, which protects against both strains of flu, plus a third, called H3N2, has been offered to elderly people, pregnant women and people with health conditions throughout the autumn and winter.

While swine flu has aggressively targeted the under-65s, elderly people have stronger immunity to it, and are at greater risk from the other strains.

Following weeks of soaring flu levels, many GPs are now running out of this year's vaccine.

On Thursday the Government ordered that 12.7 million doses of swine flu vaccine left over from last year's pandemic be released to meet demand.

S. Korea battles bird flu, foot-and-mouth

SEOUL — South Korea confirmed three new cases of bird flu on Sunday as the outbreak that began last month further hits farmers who are also battling the nation's worst-ever outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

The agriculture ministry confirmed three new cases of the highly contagious virus at duck farms in the southwestern county of Yeongam, bringing the total number of cases to seven since December 31.

At least 396,000 chickens, ducks and other birds have been or will be culled, the agriculture ministry said on its website, as the fresh cases were reported after a week-long pause.

Health authorities have placed quarantine zones around nearby areas to carry out emergency disinfection on people and vehicles, especially those transporting animal feed.

South Korea has been hit by avian influenza three times, with the last outbreak in April 2008.

The renewed bird flu scare came as farmers and health authorities struggle to curtail the country's worst-ever outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which shows few signs of abating.

Seoul on Sunday confirmed two new cases of the disease at a pig farm in the southeastern county of Bongwha and a cattle farm at the midwestern county of Cheongwon.

A total of 108 cases have been confirmed since the first outbreak on November 29, leading to the record slaughter of at least 948,000 cattle and pigs in 40 cities and counties.

Since November, South Korea has lost about seven percent of its cattle and pigs, with related losses estimated at more than one trillion won ($890 million).

More than 68,000 troops have been deployed to help culling efforts, with President Lee Myung-Bak on Thursday calling for "fundamental measures" to contain the disease, such as securing more vaccine.

In a desperate attempt to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth, the government has vaccinated 1.5 million cattle and pigs -- risking a longer export ban by overseas buyers.

It takes longer for a country that uses vaccinations to regain disease-free status from the World Organisation for Animal Health than when the disease is curbed solely by culling.

The agriculture ministry said Saturday that an additional 1.2 million pigs and cattle across the country will be vaccinated in the coming weeks, while it tries to secure vaccines for 6.5 million animals by the end of this month.

Foot-and-mouth disease affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, deer, goats and sheep.

Previous outbreaks in January and April last year cost more than 250 billion won, with nearly 50,000 animals slaughtered.

South Korea confirmed a further three duck farms confirmed avian influenza

Since the end of the respective farms in the central and Xi Nanbu, who found that chickens and ducks tested H5N1 avian influenza virus, immediately isolate the farm, but also raises the alert level.
