The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday called on those travelling to bird flu-affected countries to take special precautions after a series of infections and deaths from bird flu in nearby countries were reported. The disease's first human casualty of 2009 died in Beijing on Monday.
China, Indonesia and Vietnam are included among countries where people died of avian flu last year. According to the World Health Organization, a total of 391 people were infected with bird flu in 15 countries as of December 2008, and 247 of them died. Korea has not seen any cases of bird flu transmitted to humans so far. KCDC urged those travelling to such countries to refrain from going to poultry farms and to avoid contact with wild birds.
