KENDRAPADA: Death of many crows in the port town of Paradip on Sunday and Monday has triggered panic among residents, who have been advised by forest and veterinary officials not to touch the carcasses.
"Around 50 crows died in Paradip on Sunday and Monday. People of the affected areas were instructed not to handle the dead crows without gloves. They were also instructed to bury the dead crows by digging deep holes so that the disease cannot spread to more areas," said Dr Premananda Rout, chief district veterinary officer (CDVO) of Jagatsinghpur on Monday.
"The panic is caused by the simple fact that crows tend to hover over human settlements and stay in close contact with humans. Recently many crows have died due to the deadly bird flu disease or H5N1 virus in areas of Jharkhand, bordering Odisha," Rout said.
A two member team of Animal Disease Research Laboratory (ADRL), under the leadership of Dr Chita Ranhan Swain, the project director of ADRL, and Dr Jagadish Mohanty, collected samples of 10 dead crows in Paradip on Monday, which will be sent to Bhopal's Indian Veterinary Research Institute to ascertain the cause of the crows' largescale death, Rout said. "It is very difficult to comment on reasons behind the deaths till we receive a detailed report, expected in a week's time. We are taking suitable measures and seeking views of experts about the deaths of crows," he said.
"Crows are scavengers. The authority is not taking steps to protect the scavengers. Crows are a rarity now," said Sudhanshu Parida, president of the district unit of Peoples For Animal. He demanded that the scavenger be included in the schedule of protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act and the government take steps to protect crows, which may soon become extinct due to the negligent attitude of the forest and animal husbandry departments.
Parida pointed out crows offer many services to mankind. "They are scavengers who clean up pathogens from garbage near homes, protecting children and elderly who have less immunity," he said.
He also mentioned a religious connection with the bird, which he said plays a vital role in Hindu funerals. "Crows during obsequies (shraddh) are offered a portion of food, an act supposed to benefit the departed soul," Parida informed.

At least a dozen people are dead while several others have fallen ill following the outbreak of a mysterious disease in several villages of Tonto block in the mineral-rich West Singhbhum district, about 40 km from the district headquarters, over the past week.
An unknown virus is tormenting residents for the past one month. A mysterious fever which causes drop in platelet count and gives rise to dengue-like symptoms is baffling doctors and heath officials. Tests performed on blood samples sent to National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi, and School of Tropical Disease, Kolkata, have confirmed dengue and chikungunya. However, the health department is not ruling out possibilities of an unknown viral attack.
“This mysterious strain of virus must be identified. It is leading to drop in platelet and leukocyte counts but all test reports for dengue are showing negative results,” said a health department official. The district health department has announced steps to check the casualty rate but adequate steps haven’t been taken so far.
Deputy Commissioner K Srinivasan said senior officials of the health department are inquiring into the matter. “The administration learnt about the matter through media reports. Senior officials of health department are looking into the matter,” Srinivasan said. The DC, however, refused to speak on the apparent cause behind the casualties.
Earlier, officials at the district civil surgeon’s office said a medical team led by the district medical officer has been rushed to the block to provide adequate medical treatment to ailing villagers. A few villagers have been admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital.
“A medical team is camping in the affected area distributing necessary medical help to affected villagers,” said an official, adding that more teams are likely to be sent to the affected block. However, the civil surgeon himself was not available for comments.
The administration has not concluded the exact cause behind the mysterious death of villagers. It has decided to send the sample of the contaminated water to the lab to ascertain the cause behind the casualties.
“Diarrhoea could be one reason, so the department has decided to send a sample of the contaminated pond water from the affected area to the lab for examination,” informed an official.
About five months ago, ten people died of diarrhoea in Kanskel village under Birkel panchayat limits in Gudri block of the district. “In 2009 it was swine flu and in 2010 it was dengue and this year we are confronting a viral fever outbreak. We are sure that the visit of an experts’ team will help us determine the nature of the new disease,” Swaran Singh said.
“I have never seen an outbreak of such a disease in my medical career spanning over three decades. While the number of dengue cases is rising everyday, this new virus which is yet to be identified has made things more complex,” UK Srivastava, a prominent city doctor, said.
The spread of the mysterious disease has become a cause of concern for the medical fraternity and for citizens. Patna, Dec. 22: The State Health Society, Bihar, has issued an advisory to civil surgeons to keep a tab on unusual deaths of birds in their respective districts following the outbreak of avian influenza in Jharkhand.
According to sources in the society, the step has been taken as hundreds of crows have died in Jharkhand because of avian influenza since November.
"The crows first started dying mysteriously in Jam-shedpur district. This was followed by deaths in Ranchi, Bokaro, Khunti, Sahebganj and other districts of Jharkhand. We have asked civil surgeons to be alert and keep an eye on any such incident in our state. Letters have been issued to them and we are getting updates on a daily basis," a senior official of the society said today.
"The situation is alarming in Jharkhand. Samples of dead crows from Jharkhand sent to Bhopal for laboratory tests were found infected with strains of H5N1 virus. This confirmed outbreak of avian influenza in Jharkhand," the official added.
Patna civil surgeon Dr Lakhendra Prasad said he has asked all primary health centres and other hospitals in the district to maintain a daily record of any unusual bird death.
"All veterinary hospitals have been asked to send details of bird deaths on a daily basis. So far, no unusual incident has been reported from any part of Patna district," Prasad said.
According to sources, avian influenza A (H5N1) ' commonly called bird flu ' is caused by a virus sub-type that occurs mainly in birds. The disease is contagious among birds and can be fatal.
There have been instances of human beings getting infected with the virus.
"In most of the cases, people having direct or close contact with H5N1-infected poultry or H5N1-contaminated surfaces contracted the disease. The H5N1 strain of bird flu is regarded highly pathogenic and can also cause disease and death in humans. However, most victims contract the disease through close contact with affected birds," said a veterinary doctor.
Last month, teams from the Bareilly and Bhopal wings of Indian Veterinary Research Institute had collected samples of dead scavengers from Jamshedpur.

The alarming phenomenon of crow deaths in the state
capital and Jamshedpur was brought to the notice of Jharkhand High Court on
Thursday.
A city-based journalist with a vernacular daily filed
a public interest litigation against the government for not taking steps to
protect the scavengers. In his petition, Rana Pratap said crows are a rarity
now. He added that the high court was home to many crows and other birds because
of the presence of a large number of trees. However, of late, hardly any crow is
seen on the premises, the PIL said.
Pratap also demanded that the scavenger be included in
the schedule of protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act and the
government take steps to protect crows, which may soon become extinct due to the
negligent attitude of the forest and animal husbandry departments. He alleged
that the government was trying to fool the masses by projecting the cause of
deaths as H5N1 virus.
“Had it been bird flu, it would have affected other
avian creatures too. Crows are important for the ecosystem as they consume dead
animals,” the petitioner argued, adding that over 4,000 crows had died in the
state since September.
Probe teams that visited Jamshedpur — the epicenter of
the scare — in November, confirmed the deaths due to H5N1, but did not explain
the origin of the vector. If a study conducted by Jamshedpur ornithologist K.K.
Sharma — who first sounded the alarm — is to be believed, Jharkhand had around
50,000 house crows, but in just three months, the number has come down by 40 per

Bokaro civil surgeon Mithilesh Kumar on Thursday
called upon the public to be careful and alert the district administration
should they come upon any dead birds.
Kumar said the avian flu virus H5N1, which was first
detected in crows, appeared to have spread among pigeons as well in the last
three days, as many as six birds of the latter variety had been found dead in
Bokaro and Chas township.
He added that it was feared that this disease could be
transmitted to cats and pigs, as the stray animals feed from the same place as
scavenger birds.
In a bid to stop the spread of the virus, Kumar called
for careful disposal of carcasses. People were advised to use plastic or rubber
gloves while disposing the dead birds, and the carcasses had to be buried at
least a metre below the ground after being covered in lime. The civil surgeon
also asked people to get in touch with the district animal husbandry officer Dr
Krishna Chowdhury at 9431315952 should they find any dead birds.
In the event of any human contracting the virus, the
symptoms of which include very high temperature, runny nose and severe body
ache, Kumar said such patients needed immediate attention.
Though the final results were awaited from Bhopal,
where crow carcasses found in Bokaro were sent for testing, the civil surgeon
said though the flu strain did not appear to be particularly virulent,
precautions have to be taken.

Crows in the state of Jharkhand are reportedly dying of avian-flu. Hundreds of crows are dropping dead across towns and villages of Jharkhand, and this is a worrying situation, say health officials.
The sudden death of crows were noticed last month in Jamshedpur district. This was followed by their deaths being recorded in Ranchi, Bokaro, Khuti, Sahebganj and other districts of the state. Just last week there was a mild panic as peole discovered dead crows from several places in Hazirabagh district.
