The standard of medical facilities provided by private hospitals in Mexico and other major cities is reasonable. Outside major cities, however, facilities can be very limited. Treatment at private clinics and hospitals is expensive. Doctors and hospitals expect cash payment prior to providing medical services, including for emergency care. Island resorts may lack comprehensive medical facilities.

In late April 2009 Mexican authorities declared that there was a serious outbreak of influenza in several states, including Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Baja California and Tamulipas. You should consult a doctor or the nearest hospital immediately if you develop flu-like symptoms. Travellers may be asked to declare their state of health at Mexico’s international airports prior to departure.
