Commonground Commentary: Sumatra Indonesia

What is going on in Sumatra? Here is what I have:

Bengkulu, Sumatra

Bengkulu is a city on the west coast of Sumatra island in Indonesia.With a population of 340,000 (2007), the city is capital and largest city of the Bengkulu province.


August 7th:
18 Villages in Bengkulu City tested positive for bird flu.

August 9th:

Total of 54 patients treated in isolaltion rooms. Sym’s of fever.

Treated according to SOP for Swine or Bird Flu.

August 12th:

Poultry infected with H5N1

This poultry was spread in five subdistricts :

Taba Penanjung Subdistrict --Taba Penanjung Village.

Merigi Kelindang subdistrict -- Pagar Agung Village,

Kecamatan Talang Empat -- Lagan Village, Kembang Seri and Taba Pasma.

Pagar Jati -- Desa Layang Lekat

Pondok Kelapa - Desa Pasar Pedati dan Kembang Ayun

304 Poultry died in Taba Penanjung

The breakdown is:

8 locations:
Desa Taba penanjung 21 ekor, Desa Pagar 72 ekor, Desa Kembang Seri 31 Ekor, Desa Kembang Ayun 50 ekor, Desa Lagan 20 ekor, Layang Lekat 70 ekor, Pasar Pedati 30 ekor and Taba Pasma 245 ekor.

In the same article it states:

2 cases of suspected bird flu:

So I now have 3 people, from Kembang Seri, reported with bird flu symptoms, and being tested, in 3 days (August 10 - 12th)

As you can see from the map below...I have to the north of Bengkulu, "Dumai". That is where the 54 patients were treated at Dumai Hospital. Also to the north, I have Sawahlunto. I have that marked because of the information below. A suspected bird flu case, that died. No confirmation as of today.
