A senior government official has warned of serious actions against anyone impeding the government's efforts to contain the bird flu.

After the H5N1 strain of bird flu virus was detected in hens in Kakarbhitta, the government has initiated efforts to cull chicken in specified area by providing compensation to farmers.

"We urge all to cooperate. If there is obstruction in efforts to contain the disease, we will take serious actions," said Tek Bahadur Thapa, Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, speaking at a programme, Tuesday.

His warnings have come as the government culled 11,000 chicken, and destroyed over 400 eggs and 85 kgs of chicken feed in the affected area amid murmur of protests by some local farmers.

Earlier, Agriculture Minister JP Gupta had said that the government accorded topmost priority to dealing with the bird flu.
