HANOI: Landlocked Laos has recorded its first death from swine flu, a health official said on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Laotian man, a resident of Bolikhamxai province, died on Saturday after testing positive for the A(H1N1) strain of influenza, said the official with the National Centre for Laboratory and Epidemiology.
Three members of his family also tested positive and are receiving medication, the official said, adding they were among dozens of cases of swine flu infection recorded in the country.
Swine flu emerged globally in April and has killed more than 700 people around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday.
Laos recorded its first infection in June.
The A (H1N1) virus has a mix of swine, avian and human influenza genes in a unique combination not seen before, but the symptoms are similar to regular seasonal flu, the WHO says.
