Malaysia Bans China Chicken Imports After Bird Flu, Times Says

By Angus Whitley

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysia banned chicken imports from China, where the bird-flu virus has killed five people, the New Straits Times reported.

The ban, put in place on Jan. 16, will be lifted when China is clear of the disease, the newspaper said, citing Veterinary Services Department Director General Abd Aziz Jamaluddin.

Malaysia won’t run out of chicken because domestic companies that import poultry from China have enough stock for three months, according to the report.

An 18-year-old man from southern China died from avian influenza on Jan. 26, according to China’s Ministry of Health, becoming the fifth victim of the disease in the country this year.
