Culling of birds continued in Meghalaya for the second day on Sunday as reports on the tests of blood samples of birds from Assam-Meghalaya border villages in Ri Bhoi district were yet to reach.
To prevent spread of the H5NI virus from bird flu-struck Assam, the state veterinary department started the culling operations late last evening at Pilangkata, Maikailu Upper Kholi and Patarkuchi, falling within the three-kilometer radius of Khanapara farm in Assam where cases of bird flu have been detected.
State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department (AH&VD) Director Dr D Khonglah, who is overseeing the operations, said about 3,000 domestic fowls would be culled in about four villages in the Meghalaya portion of Khanapara.
Over 70 medical and veterinary staff are helping in the culling operations.
Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the entire Ri Bhoi district aimed at preventing any outbreak in the state.
The veterinary department had collected blood samples from birds and poultry from the Assam-Meghalaya border areas and have sent them for tests to Bhopal. The results of the tests are awaited.
The state has constituted 150 Rapid Response Teams and posted them along border areas, besides setting up control rooms in all the seven districts.
