السيناريو الكارثة هو تحول نهر النيل إلى بركة لإلقاء الخنازير النافقة، فرغم أن الجهات الرسمية تؤكد أن ذلك لم يحدث إلا أن العثور على بعض الخنازير النافقة ملقاة فى ترعة الإبراهيمية بالمنيا يعد مقدمة لكارثة بيئية، ما لم ترفع شرطة المسطحات المائية والمحليات ووزارة الرى درجات الاستعداد القصوى لمنع حدوث ذلك.

المستشار عبد العاطى الشافعى رئيس مجلس إدارة جمعية "حماة النيل" وصف العثور على خنازير نافقة فى ترعة الإبراهيمية بالكارثة البيئية الخطيرة التى لا يجب السكوت عليها، وقال إنها مقدمة لظهور خنازير نافقة فى النيل نفسه، واعتبر إلقاء الخنازير النافقة أو أى حيوانات أخرى فى أحد المجارى المائية جريمة إنسانية وبيئية لا يجب أن تمر دون حساب، لأن كل المجارى المائية فى مصر متصلة بنهر النيل، وأنه فى حال وجود خنازير مصابة بالأنفلونزا فهذا يعنى "تهديد أكثر من 80 مليون مواطن ويمثل 80 مليون جناية شروع فى قتل" لأن التلوث من السهل جداً أن ينتقل من المجارى الفرعية إلى النهر، حسب تعبيره.

الدكتور نادر شحاتة مدير جهاز شئون البيئة فرع أسيوط، قال إنه حتى الآن لم تأت أى بلاغات تفيد بوجود خنازير نافقة فى النيل أو فى المجارى المائية الأخرى، وأنه لم يثبت حتى الآن وجود إصابات بالأنفلونزا، وبالتالى فإن تلك الخنازير سليمة، وإذا حدث وتم إلقاؤها فى النيل، فتأثيرها سيكون مثل أى حيوان آخر "سوف تغير من خواص المياه إذا كانت بالقرب من محطات المعالجة"، وأضاف أنه حتى فى حالة إصابة الخنازير النافقة بالأنفلونزا، فإن هذا لا يعنى انتقال المرض عن طريق استخدام المياه أو عن طريق الشرب لأن المرض ينتقل عن طريق الجهاز التنفسى والمخالطة الشديدة للحيوانات المصابة.
