Egypt: Fatwa against bird flu

Authorized the Secretariat of the Fatwa House of Fatwa to slaughter birds in bags, for the prevention of avian influenza, and called people to do so.

وأصدرت اللجنة فتوى تبيح ذبح الدجاج، وغيره من الطيور، فى كيس مصنوع من البلاستيك أو أى مادة أخرى وإبراز عنق الطائر منه، بغير خنق، ثم ذبحه طبقا للشريعة الإسلامية. The Committee issued a fatwa permitting the slaughter of chickens and other birds, in a bag made of plastic or any other material and to highlight the neck of the bird from him, without a choke, then slaughtered according to Islamic law.

وأكدت أمانة الفتوى أنه يجب على الناس فعل ذلك إن كانت هذه هى الطريقة المتعينة للوقاية من مرض إنفلونزا الطيور. The secretariat confirmed the opinion that people should do so if this is the way Almtainp for the prevention of avian flu.

جاءت الفتوى ردا على سؤال باحثين أجانب حول مدى شرعية طريقة لذبح الطيور، تم تطبيقها خلال تجارب علمية فى أمريكا، بهدف تقليل مخاطر انتقال الفيروس من الطائر للإنسان خلال عملية الذبح. The fatwa came in response to a question of foreign researchers about how legitimate the way to the slaughter of birds, have been applied during scientific experiments in America, in order to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus from bird to humans through the slaughtering process.

وأوضح الباحثان فى سؤالهما أنهما كانا يبحثان عن طريقة آمنة للذبح، بحيث تكون سهلة وبسيطة وتستطيع السيدة الريفية عملها فى المنزل، بحيث تكون «حلالا» فى الوقت نفسه، وتوصلوا إلى أنه يمكن وضع الطائر فى كيس بلاستيكى عادى، وإبراز رأسه ورقبته دون خنقه أو تقييد حركته، ثم ذبحه بالسكين، وقالوا إن النتائج أثبتت أن كمية الغبار المحمل بالدم وإفرازات الطائر قد انخفضت بشكل ملحوظ.
