Swine Flu Reported in Nyapyidaw

By THE IRRAWADDY
Friday, February 19, 2010

Cases of A/H1N1 swine flu have been reported in Naypyidaw, the Burmese capital, following a similar outbreak in Rangoon earlier this month, according to sources in the former capital.

A number of people, including government employes, in Naypyidaw have been diagnosed with A/H1N1 swine flu, and the authorities are providing vaccines and medicine, said a journalist in Rangoon.

About 30 civil servants who attended ceremonies for the 63rd Union Day in Naypyidaw were reportedly quarantined in the capital, according to one report, which could not be confirmed.

It was not clear if those quarantined had already contracted the flu or only had been exposed to people with the flu.

An outbreak of A/H1N1 flu was reported in Rangoon in early February when dozens of students contracted the disease.

According to a physician at the Ministry of Health, 27 cases of the disease have been confirmed since Feb. 7. The total number number in Burma now stands at 31, although the official number is 29, according to state-run media.

All 27 cases were students from primary and high schools in North Dagon Township in Rangoon. The infected students were admitted to the Wai Bar Gi infectious disease hospital. Seventy-three people with whom they had contact were quarantined.

On Feb. 5, four people in Chin State also tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

Cases of the H5N1 virus and A/H1N1 flu have both been reported in Rangoon,
sources said.

Meanwhile, sources in Rangoon said that Burmese authorities have banned the sale of eggs in some markets in Rangoon Division after the discovery of the H5N1 virus at a chicken farm.

Last year, 69 cases of the disease were confirmed.

Indonesia threatened by highly pathogenic Avian Influenza

Garut, W Java (ANTARA News) - The bird flu viruses attacking Indonesia have been classified as "highly pathogenic avian influenza" (HPAI), a veterinarian said here Tuesday.

In the West Java district of Garut alone, there were at least 75 cases of HPAI between 2006 and 2010 in which more than 2,893 chickens suddenly died, Dida K.Endang said.

The attacks of bird flu viruses in 48 villages of Garut district over the past four years had sparked fears of human infection, said the head of Garut`s veterinary office.

To protect local residents from the worst possibilities, a total of 7,000 infected chickens were culled.

Local authorities paid the owners a compensation of Rp12,500 (US$1,4) for every culled chicken, Endang said.

However, not all people welcomed the amount of compensation. Instead of giving the positively infected chickens for culling, they hid the poultry and just handed over small chickens, he said.

As a result, the efforts to control and halt the spread of bird flu viruses in Garut district were not so successful. This condition was worsened by the lack of locals` health awareness, he said.

Instead of burning the infected chickens, many Garut residents throw them into rivers, creeks, or ponds. Worse, some even consumed the infected chickens, he said.

In curbing the spread of the dangerous viruses, he urged the people to report any suspicious bird flu cases immediately to 12 bird flu surveillance teams.

The team members would have gone to the suspicious spots within 24 hours. The people could also report the condition to the heads of neighborhoods or villages, he said.

The West Java provincial government had targeted that by 2014 the province would have been free from bird flu viruses, Endang said.

The habit of throwing the bird flu-infected chickens into the river was not only found in Garut but also in such other West Java towns as Bogor.

This situation had also made Head of Bogor City`s Health Office Triawan Elan deeply concerned.

"We have asked local residents, who find chickens suddenly die not to throw them into the rivers but to burn them," Triawan Elan said recently.

He warned that the threats of bird flu viruses remained real after tens of chickens in Caparigi suburb suddenly died.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), avian influenza or "bird flu" is a contagious disease of animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs.

The WHO has warned that the infection with avian influenza viruses could spread very rapidly through poultry flocks.

Indonesia has 33 provinces. Only three have been confirmed free from the threat of bird flu viruses.

Indonesia has been dealing with bird flu since 2005. However, the H5N1 type influenza is also known to have attacked chicken and birds in other Asian countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia, China, and Vietnam.

CIDRAP: Egypt reports another H5N1 case, more poultry outbreaks

Lisa Schnirring * Staff Writer
Feb 15, 1010 (CIDRAP News) – Egypt's health ministry reported another human H5N1 influenza case, in a 29-year-old woman from Menofia governorate who died of her infection, according to a statement yesterday from the Egyptian State Information Service.

News of the latest human case came as Egypt's animal health officials detailed 33 new H5N1 outbreaks in poultry that have been confirmed since Feb 1 and as foreign-language media sources reported other human H5N1 infections and deaths.

The notice of the woman's infection contained few details, but said her death brought the number of fatalities to 30 and raised the number of cases to as many as 99. When the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the latest Egyptian case on Feb 10, it listed Egypt's total as 97 cases and 27 fatalities, so it's unclear if Egypt's tally includes H5N1 cases and deaths that haven't yet been reported to the WHO. The FluTrackers infectious disease message board has noted what appear to be additional H5N1 deaths and an illness that have only been reported in the Arabic press so far.

Since the first of the year Egypt has reported seven H5N1 infections in humans, and the infections seem to be striking adults more than children, a change from a pattern in 2009, when the youngest children seemed to bear the greatest disease burden. Among seven H5N1 infections reported to the WHO this year, five have occurred in adults—three women and two men.

Meanwhile, the rise in human H5N1 infections seems to be following increased H5N1 activity in the country's s poultry. Egypt's Strengthening Avian Influenza Detection and Response (SAIDR) site recently posted reports of 33 H5N1 detections since Feb 1. The outbreaks hit birds in 12 different governorates, with the highest numbers of outbreaks in Dakahlia (7), Qalyubia (6), and Menofia (5).

Most of the outbreaks were detected in household birds, though the virus was detected at four farms—two during routine surveillance. The type of operation was not reported for one of the outbreaks.

Yangon: Poultry Confirmed H5N1 With No Symptoms

In Yangon, at a poultry farm in Mayangone township, they have declared the first outbreak of H5N1 in poultry since the OIE declared the country avian flu free in April 2008.

(Volume 26, No. 510)

OFFICIALS were last week monitoring Yangon markets and poultry farms for signs of avian influenza after an outbreak of the disease was detected at a poultry farm in Mayangone township.

The outbreak was the first confirmed case of H5N1 influenza in Myanmar since the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) declared the country avian flu-free in April 2008.

“We are mainly monitoring the live bird market,” said Dr Aung Gyi, the deputy general manager of the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.

click on map:

“I want to warn breeders about the lack of symptoms [in the most recent case]. This time we found H5N1 influenza occurring in chickens that showed no signs of decreased feeding or egg production,” Dr Aung Gyi said.

The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, tested chickens at a farm in Mayangone’s No 5 ward after several died in suspicious circumstances. Tests showed the chickens had died from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) after being infected with H5N1 influenza, Dr Aung Gyi said.

“Since the end of January, the farm had some cases of chickens dying. We tested the dead chickens in two ways – rapid test and polymerase chain reaction test – at our enhanced laboratory in Insein township and these tests confirmed that the deaths were caused by H5N1,” Dr Aung Gyi said.

About 2500 layers were subsequently destroyed by authorities as a precautionary measure. “We disposed of all the chicken and ducks at the farm and within a one-kilometre radius of the affected area and disinfected everything. Now we are taking follow-up measures, such as monitoring other chicken farms in Yangon,” he said.

Dr Aung Gyi said the outbreak has been reported to the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and surveillance, epidemiology, bio security and diagnosis teams are working to ensure there are no further outbreaks.

He said people handling poultry could take steps to minimise the chances of the outbreak spreading.

The department is also implementing a computerised database system for monitoring poultry farms with the collaboration of database specialist and epidemiologist Dr Chris Bartel from the FAO. The FAO has provided GPS, computers and software and the department is now undertaking a survey of the animal population and population density across the country.
