Crack down on illegal poultry

HONG KONG- DISEASE experts in Southeast Asia will map out key poultry smuggling routes, especially along Cambodia's long border with Thailand and Vietnam, in a move to prevent the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus in the region.

Researchers from China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam met in the Chinese city of Kunming to discuss ways to control the spread of the virus, which kills 60 per cent of the people it infects.

Even though H5N1 transmission between people is weak, experts say it continues to pose a risk especially if it gets mixed with the now dominant H1N1 swine flu virus. Such a hybrid may then be both deadly and easily transmissible among people.

'In Cambodia, illegal or informal trade occurs along its long border with Thailand and Vietnam. There is that informal trade, not just in birds, but eggs and other poultry products, smuggling,' said Khieu Borin, director of Cambodia's Centre for Livestock and Agriculture Department. 'It can be in small or large numbers ... but because poultry has (can be infected by) H5N1, so smuggling of fighting cocks or chickens can carry H5N1, there will be some risk.'

While scarce media attention has been paid in the last year to H5N1, there have been outbreaks of the disease in birds and it has killed people in China, Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Experts also discussed the role of wild migratory birds in the spread of the H5N1. 'Our China colleagues found that bar-headed geese fly from China to India and found records of outbreaks in poultry along the flyway. This suggests the role of these birds in spreading the virus along the flyway,' said Witthawat Wiriyarat, a veterinarian and virologist with Thailand's Mahidol University. 'There are opportunities to meet other birds along the pathway like in paddy fields and wetlands. If one bird can release the virus into the environment, other animals can get it and spread it to poultry.' -- REUTERS

Song & Lyrics.....Power Play - Steppenwolf

I don't usually wonder into the field on current political issues...but this song is so relevant right now...I just had to post it!! This song was released in 1969, 41 years ago....

Power Play - Steppenwolf

What gives you the right hey you
To stand there and tell me what to do
Tell me who gave you the power
To stop me from livin' like I do
Remember if you plan to stay
Those who give can take away
Don't bite the hand that feeds you

Just one time I'd like to be somewhere where
None of your clever lies fill the air
I'm tired of your frozen smile and your voice of tin
Just might all gang up on you
Turn the knob and do you in

Remember if you plan to stay
Those who give can take away.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you

This never ending power play
"Tween Jealous greed and vicious hate
Is grinding us like giant millstones
But it can't be our only fate
It's time we got our heads together
And let'em know that we're awake

Those in the dark, you know they're no longer blind
They're breakin' from your strangle hold on their minds
Those that can see don't need no one to cross the street
Be careful who you're pushin' round
They just might find you obsolete

Remember if you plan to stay
Those who give can take away.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you

Indicator of a new threat of the virus ..
Health: 20% of the deaths of healthy swine flu

Thursday, January 14th, 2010 - 18:34

The Ministry of Health and the arrival of the mortality rate of swine flu among healthy 20% of the total number of deaths due to infection of swine flu, which reached to 210 deaths as of yesterday evening, Wednesday.

The death of large numbers of healthy people caused by the virus has reached more than 20 cases so far described, Dr. Abdel Rahman Shahin, official spokesman of the Ministry of Health, that has no scientific explanation so far, pointing out that this ratio occurred between healthy and do not have any health problems at all, This confirms the seriousness of the virus, which targets lung, irrational, and pneumonia occurs Allthab transferred to the other lung, to become a double infection, which was an important predictor of deterioration in the patient's condition, which often lead to a death, particularly among the chronically ill, but the new, as described by Chahine is to reach this case between healthy.

On the interpretation of this Shahin said that due to the difference in the quality of the virus, which scored three first differences that prevalence score 10 times the normal spread of viruses, in addition to index the second and embodied in the target age group between 17 to 30, is concentrated at the age of 22 years, a death rate of worrying, The virus used to infect children and the elderly as in the least degree of immunity.

The third indicator, which he described as dangerous is the official spokesman Amadafat disease, which does not differentiate between the healthy and chronically ill in the recent period.

Genetic Analyses of Influenza in Wild Birds Can Improve Avian Flu Surveillance Programs

[I can't believe it took them until 2010 to discover this....]

ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 2010) — Genetic analyses of avian influenza in wild birds can help pinpoint likely carrier species and geographic hot spots where Eurasian viruses would be most likely to enter North America, according to new U.S. Geological Survey research.

Persistence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI H5N1) virus in Eurasia and Africa, and concerns that the virus might be transported among continents by migratory birds has resulted in global surveillance programs. In the United States, state and federal agencies tested more than 326,000 wild bird samples from across the country from 2005 to 2008.

The new work by USGS has nationwide importance because it offers a method for avian influenza surveillance programs to target their efforts for the right species and in the best locations.

In the study, USGS scientists conducted the first-ever survey of avian influenza gene variation in a single host species -- the northern pintail -- at each end of the bird's migratory flyway in North America: Alaska and California. These birds migrate between North America and Eurasia and in Japan and China have been known to occur in outbreak areas of HPAI H5N1.

The researchers discovered that some avian influenza viruses recovered from the North American pintails contain genes that are more closely related to influenza viruses in Eurasia, and that the greatest number of these genes occurred in pintail viruses from Alaska. In contrast, northern pintails sampled on their main wintering areas in California had few Eurasian virus genes.

The researchers speculate that Euasian flu genes become less prevalent as birds migrate southward in fall due to rapid mutation and reassortment, common to influenza viruses, and dilution by existing North American flu viruses. Reassortment, a shuffling process among viruses that infect the same host, occurs in all types of influenza A viruses, including H1N1 and H5N1.

"Our research demonstrates a genetically based technique for prioritizing wild bird species that are targeted for surveillance," said Dr. John Pearce, a USGS scientist and lead author of the study. "Refining the list of priority species for surveillance by this method can reduce time and effort involved in surveillance sampling and is needed not only for Alaska, but also for those species along the North

Atlantic coast of North America that may engage in transcontinental migrations, such as shorebirds and gulls," Pearce said.

With few exceptions, genetic evidence for transcontinental avian influenza virus exchange in North America has come from coastal regions closest to Europe or Asia -- Alaska and the North Atlantic.

These areas, said Pearce, probably represent the first or primary areas of contact for foreign viruses, yet only about a third of birds tested for HPAI H5N1 in the United States so far have been from these regions.

"Based on this new genetic evidence, one possible new strategy would be to target surveillance efforts on species in these coastal regions that are geographically closer to current sources of the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus," Pearce said. "If there is no evidence of transcontinental avian influenza virus gene exchange for a certain species or regional pathway, then those species and areas could be deemphasized in future surveillance programs."

The research was published in the November 2009 issue of Evolutionary Applications, and was authored by scientists from three USGS centers: the USGS Alaska Science Center, the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, and the USGS Western Ecological Research Center.

Vietnam: Need to maintain a system to monitor influenza throughout the country - CDC To Cut Funding

January 11, 2010
Recently in Hanoi, Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology with the central Nha Trang Pasteur Institute, Pasteur Institute Ho Chai Minh, Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Highlands, representatives of the Center for Disease Control and Infectious Disease United States (CDC) with many experts in the epidemiology workshop held national influenza surveillance from 2006 to present. Experts are evaluating the role of this system and proposed to continue to maintain. However, problems are posed when the finance 100% of the CDC will change in March to come.

"Read" evolutions of the flu season typically syndrome nationwide

The first time Vietnam has a picture of the overall situation flu syndrome (HCC) throughout the country when the influenza surveillance system was put into operation at 15 points nationally since 2006. Prof Nguyen Tran Hien - Director of Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for the Central, from 2006 - 2009, in total more than 2,500 patients were examined, the number of HCC screening positive for influenza virus account for 21.9%. The results at 15 monitoring points in the time of HCC patients with the highest in March and September but HCC generally occurs throughout the year. This also coincides with the results of monitoring of dangerous infectious diseases 24 and in accordance with the operation of the world's flu viruses and other influenza vaccines room was used extensively worldwide. Based on monitoring results HCC during 4 years, Assoc. Nguyen Tran Hien said flu in Vietnam is not clear that occur seasonally throughout the year. Influenza virus strains circulating in our country is A/H1 influenza, and influenza B. A/H3 Depending on the areas that appear after the type, and they in turn replaced each other.

Close monitoring of new pandemic influenza A/H1N1 and ca severe pneumonia due to virus
As reported by the influenza surveillance system countries, since the influenza A/H1N1 virus appears new in the world, all the monitoring points of Vietnam was sticking evolutions intrusive Monitoring and outbreak of epidemics in both water. The first cases were discovered on May 30, 2009 in Ho. Ho Chi Minh City, then from the 28th week, the new ca influenza A/H1N1 increased continuously and dominant compared to other common types of flu. Special 39th week, a new influenza A/H1N1 constitute 95% of the total number of positive with other types of flu season. So far, this virus is still completely dominant.

Parallel to the normal seasonal influenza surveillance, the severe pneumonia cases were monitored for influenza A/H5N1 virus-related or not. From 2006 until now has 721 ca severe pneumonia associated with suspected influenza viruses, of which 112 are positive for influenza A/H5N1, 57 deaths. About the actual situation, the TS. Tran Ngoc Huu - Director of the Institute Pasteur TP. Ho Chi Minh said, in principle, avian influenza occurs first, then going out on the flu but now reality is that H5N1 cases were detected first, then process the new epidemiological investigation has that drives the bird flu.

Operating system how the CDC cut funding?

By TS. Tran Nhu Duong, Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology Central, with the assistance of CDC, we have been involved in influenza surveillance systems worldwide, this is a good opportunity to enhance professional capabilities at all all the stages of monitoring, epidemiological investigation, examination ... We never get all the supervision, as current science, although only four years of operation but greatly effective.

He Kappella - CDC experts said he appreciated the point that effective national influenza surveillance in Vietnam achieved in four years, which is built a fairly complete picture of HCC flu. Providing full information about the HCC does not only mean in terms of health (defined measures progress, building treatment guidelines, plans to use reasonable vaccine ...) but also related to economic activities - social. Vietnam will have to adjust the operation of this system when the investor 100% of the current CDC would cut from April 2010.

This information makes the professionals concerned, because if there is no funding will not be able to maintain the operation of the monitoring system as at present, so flu prevention will be very difficult because no accurate, especially when in our country, influenza A/H1N1 is translated parallel to the presence of influenza A/H5N1.

In order to maintain the monitoring system as the current influenza experts believe that should continue to be supported by the CDC, and must have taken the initiative of the internal forces. As he Kapella, gradually cutting off funding is the investment activities of the CDC guideline, they only support 80 - 100% of the first phase of the project, and then tapered off. The project will have to adapt this to match the actual situation. He said that conditions funding cuts, Vietnam needs to consider should increase or decrease the monitoring point in the near future, to review all activities to take measures to save the first and most effective.

In the attack of bird flu in South Lampung regency since the beginning of this year, there were three cases recorded by the number of 92 dead birds tail.

Since the beginning of January 2010 of bird flu occurred in the Village Building, District Palas, and the virus has also attacked the village-owned poultry Tajimalela, District Kalianda

Great hope the community can work together with the Animal Husbandry Department to work together to alert against bird flu, because the rainy season is very potential as a medium for transmission of the disease.

He said the public should anticipate the environmental hygiene and impound livestock to suppress transmission of the disease, because the 17 districts in South Lampung regency is endemic areas of bird flu.

Related to the need for disinfectant, Animal Husbandry Department of South Lampung district has requested an additional provision of disinfectant to the Animal Husbandry Department for the sprayed Lampung province to a number of areas vulnerable to bird flu in local districts.

"Our supplies are running low disinfectant, so that additional needs, considering South Lampung is endemic areas of bird flu," he said.

He said South Lampung Animal Husbandry Department currently has a supply of 120 liters of disinfectant, and is expected not sufficient for one year.

Therefore, it will ask for an additional 300 liters to as much inventory during 2010.

"Because, based on the case last year, we need as many as 600 liters more," he said.

However, the word da, with the addition of 300 liters is expected to be sufficient if the bird flu virus attacks are not as high as last year.

He said the disinfectant will be sprayed into a poultry barn owned by the radius of the attack to suppress the spread of firus.

In addition, the disinfectant will be given to branch offices throughout the district to supply at any time if there are findings of bird flu cases.

Based on the data in the local Animal Husbandry Department, during 2008 the number of cases of bird flu in South Lampung 35 cases, and the number of dead birds reached the tail 3000.

In 2009 the number decreased, where only 17 cases, and the number of 500 dead birds tail.

While the at the beginning of 2010 there were three cases of bird flu with the number of birds that died suddenly about 100 tails. (L. KA * H009)

Under fire WHO ready to review handling of flu pandemic

01/12/2010 8:55 PM

GENEVA, Switzerland - The World Health Organisation said Tuesday that it was ready to hold an independent review of its response to swine flu, amid growing criticism of official handling of the pandemic.

However, WHO officials said such a review might not be set up until the pandemic is regarded as over, a period which could take months or even years.

"We expect and indeed welcome criticism and a chance to discuss it," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told journalists.

"In the future we will also do an evaluation of our work with outside experts, in order to assess the work of WHO in the management of the pandemic influenza H1N1," she added.

"Evaluation is necessary and we are open to recommendations that can improve our work, when this is over WHO will undoubtedly work with outside experts."

The UN health agency was still working out the details of such a process.

Council of Europe parliamentarian Wolfgang Wodarg last week said he and several colleagues had called for a commission of inquiry into a "false pandemic" and the way it was handled at national and European levels, claiming pressure from pharmaceutical firms.

Some European countries have been trying to sell off stocks of unused vaccine in recent weeks, after many had geared up to deliver two doses instead of what eventually turned out to be the required single dose.

Chaib denied that the WHO was in conflict with its member states.

WHO flu spokeswoman Nyka Alexander said it could take "several seasons" to determine that a pandemic was over.

"We can't say a pandemic is over until we have seen that it hasn't come back," she explained.

The WHO is also due to open its annual executive board meeting next Monday to a question and answer session from the 34 member states in the body on its management of the A(H1N1) pandemic.

The WHO declared a global pandemic last June, weeks after putting the world on an emergency footing over the sudden discovery and swift spread of the then unknown new swine flu virus in April 2009 in Mexico and the United States.

It now reaches into more than 200 countries having left at least 12,799 people dead, according to the agency's data.

FDA advises on manufacturing MNPs during a pandemic

By Nick Taylor, 12-Jan-2010

Continuing production of medically necessary products (MNPs) in the event of a pandemic will be made easier by developing a contingency plan, according to the FDA which has issued guidance on the subject.

The high profile of H1N1, and earlier threats from H5N1 and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), have raised awareness of the damage widespread employee illness could cause to pharma companies’ manufacturing operations.

To mitigate against this threat the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends manufacturers of MNPs formulate a plan. MNPs are defined as serious disease treatments which cannot be substituted with an alternative product.

In its draft guidance the FDA states that the plan should be developed and tested before a crisis occurs. Failure to do so could lead to companies developing plans during a pandemic, when there may be insufficient time and management resources.

Furthermore, the agency recommends that if manufacturers can foresee a period of high absenteeism they should begin preparations. These steps include increasing the inventory of MNPs and raw materials, training personnel for different roles and conducting maintenance.

The guidance lists periodic maintenance as one of the activities that could be ceased in the event of high absenteeism, along with some stability testing, environmental monitoring of facilities and examinations of data.

Making these cutbacks is intended to focus resources on essential manufacturing steps. If these are insufficient the FDA suggests companies could reduce second-person verification activities, delay deviation investigations of minor events and cease in-process adequacy of mix tests.

Implementing these measures, and others listed in the guidance, could result in the manufacturing process failing to meet all statutory and regulatory requirements.

However, the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) “is prepared to exercise enforcement discretion” in the event of high absenteeism, as long “as the product remains safe and effective”.

To ensure this goal is achieved the FDA recommends that manufacturers carefully monitor indictors of product quality to note unfavourable trends. Furthermore, manufacturers should keep samples for testing at a later date if it cannot be performed at the time.

H1N1 Flu Is a False Pandemic, Health Expert Claims

Monday, January 11, 2010

A leading health expert said the swine flu scare was a "false pandemic" led by drug companies that stood to make billions from vaccines, The Sun reported Monday.

Wolfgang Wodarg, head of health at the Council of Europe, claimed major firms organized a "campaign of panic" to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic.

He believes it is "one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century," and he has called for an inquiry.

An emergency debate on the issue will be held by the Council of Europe later this month.

The Council of Europe covers 47 European countries and seeks to develop common and democratic principles between the nations.

Wodarg said, "It's just a normal kind of flu. It does not cause a tenth of deaths caused by the classic seasonal flu.

"The great campaign of panic we have seen provided a golden opportunity for representatives from labs who knew they would hit the jackpot in the case of a pandemic being declared.

"We want to clarify everything that brought about this massive operation of disinformation. We want to know who made decisions, on the basis of what evidence, and precisely how the influence of the pharmaceutical industry came to bear on the decision-making."

He added: "A group of people in the WHO is associated very closely with the pharmaceutical industry."

The WHO recently reaffirmed its stance that the pandemic is not over. However, the number of swine flu deaths is dramatically lower than expected.

In an interview with France's L'Humanite Sunday, Wodarg also raised concerns about swine flu vaccines.

"The vaccines were developed too quickly. Some ingredients were insufficiently tested," he said.

"But there is worse to come. The vaccine developed by Novartis was produced in a bioreactor from cancerous cells, a technique that had never been used until now.

"This was not necessary. It has also led to a considerable mismanagement of public money.

"The time has come at last for us to make demands on governments. The purpose of the inquiry is to prevent more false alarms of this type in the future."

"We must make sure people can rely on the analysis and the expertise of national and international public institutions. The latter are now discredited, because millions of people have been vaccinated with products with inherent possible health risks."

Sanofi’s Vaccine for Mosquito Virus Protects Adults, Study Says

By Simeon Bennett

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Sanofi-Aventis SA’s experimental vaccine against dengue protected healthy volunteers against all four strains of the virus in a study, bringing the drugmaker closer to providing the first vaccine against a disease that threatens 40 percent of the world’s population.

The vaccine protected all 66 adults a U.S. study in which they were given three shots over 15 months, according to the results published Jan. 9 on the Journal of Infectious Diseases Web site. Most people were protected after two doses, including those who received a placebo for the first injection and the vaccine for the second and third shots, the study showed.

Sanofi is conducting a larger trial that includes children, who are more likely to become sick or die from dengue. Paris- based Sanofi said in May it will invest 350 million euros ($508 million) to build a plant to make dengue vaccine in France, preparing for demand that analysts have said could generate annual market revenue of about $1 billion.

The study “is an important step,” the researchers wrote in the trial funded by Sanofi. “These results paved the way for ongoing and future large-scale efficacy trials of our candidate.”

There is no specific treatment for dengue. The most common side effects in the study were headache, malaise and muscle pain, the researchers said.

About 2.5 billion people worldwide live in areas prone to the mosquito-borne viruses, which the World Health Organization says causes about 50 million infections each year. Mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus are now found in 28 U.S. states, according to a 2009 study.

U.S. Trims H1N1 Vaccine Order From CSL as Global Interest Wanes

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. government wants less than half the swine flu vaccine it originally sought from CSL Ltd., joining countries such as France and Germany in canceling orders amid waning public concern about the influenza pandemic.

The Department of Health and Human Services told Melbourne- based CSL on Dec. 30 it was cutting its order for vaccine against the H1N1 strain by 22 million doses to 14 million doses, CSL spokeswoman Rachel David said in an e-mail today. Vaccine- makers including London-based GlaxoSmithKline Plc and Baxter International Inc., of Deerfield, Illinois, also had orders cut even as governments stepped up efforts to promote the shot.

Vaccine demand has waned since suppliers overcame an initial shortage at the start of the Northern Hemisphere flu season and the number of new H1N1 cases fell. The U.S. government, which increased its vaccine order by 29 percent in September, is running advertisements in national newspapers featuring an open letter urging Americans to get the vaccine.

“The willingness to be vaccinated against swine flu is much lower than what governments projected,” said Andrew Goodsall, a health-care analyst with UBS AG in Sydney. Goodsall estimates the smaller order will trim as much as A$30 million ($28 million) from CSL’s full-year net income.

The U.S. is allowed to change the quantity of its order under its contract with CSL, David said. The company’s contracts with other governments, including Australia and Singapore, don’t contain so-called stop work orders, she said. Excess vaccine material will be used in the production of seasonal flu shots, David said.

Financial Impact

The “financial impact cannot be known until the pandemic and seasonal programs have run their course, but is not expected to be major,” she said.

CSL fell 18 cents, or 0.6 percent, to A$31.93 on the Australian stock exchange today, compared with a 0.8 percent increase in the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index.

Glaxo said Jan. 4 it is willing to renegotiate its contract to provide France with 50 million doses of H1N1 vaccine after the government overestimated its needs. Four days later, David Salisbury, director of immunization for the U.K.’s Department of Health, said it was in talks with Glaxo, the nation’s largest drugmaker, about canceling some of its order. The drugmaker said it was also in discussion with Belgium to reduce an order.

Influenza's call of the wild

Published On Mon Jan 11 2010

What animals can help spread flu viruses? Two wildlife disease experts examined which species might act as reservoirs for influenza viruses and be "mixing vessels" in which new strains are generated. They analyzed complex carbohydrates found on the surface membranes of cells, which can act as "receptors" for influenza viruses.

Mark Schrenzel and Bruce Rideout already knew H5N1, the avian strain of influenza, makes use of receptors containing an alpha 2,3 sialic-acid linkage, whereas H1N1 strains employ the alpha 2,6 sialic-acid bond. They also knew any species (domesticated swine being one) that carries receptors of both types could act as a mixing vessel. They set out to find which animals have what, focusing on species likely to meet waterfowl like geese and ducks, known to be vulnerable to H5N1. The researchers analyzed the receptors of 60 species.

The North American striped skunk, left, and the Persian leopard were found to carry receptors for both H5N1 and H1N1 and could serve as mixing vessels.

The opossum has the avian flu receptor, as do the arctic fox, Chinese wolf and corsac fox.

The bald eagle, along with the European otter, polar bear and raccoon, lacks the receptors to make it vulnerable to H5N1.

Indonesia: Confirmed H5N1 Human Case in Pekanbaru

January 10, 2010

Pekanbaru Teen in Critical Condition, Coma After Contracting Bird Flu

A17-year-old boy from Pekanbaru, Riau, is now in a critical condition after being infected with the deadly bird flu virus.

“The patient is in a critical condition and in a coma,” said Azisman Saad, head of the bird flu team at Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Pekanbaru.

Azisman said the boy, identified only as JF, was isolated in intensive care after suffering high fever and trouble breathing.

“He needs a breathing machine to survive,” Azisman said, adding that the provincial health agency had sent the boy’s blood sample to the Ministry of Health and the test result came back positive for H5N1 avian influenza.

Evy, one of the boy’s relatives, said the family did not know where JF could have contracted the virus because he had no history of direct contact with sick poultry.

Evy said JF fell into coma on Friday after experiencing some bird flu symptoms, including trouble breathing, fever and diarrhea.

Azisman said the hospital had handled two other positive cases of bird flu since December, both occurring in children below the age of 5. One of the patients died on Dec. 31, while the other was recovering and had been released from isolation.

Azisman said a 5-year-old girl from Indragiri Hulu died because she received treatment too late and was brought to the hospital in a very bad condition.

Tjandra Yoga Aditama, director general of communicable diseases at the Health Ministry, said 20 people had been confirmed as having contracted bird flu in 2009, of which 19 had died.

The findings meant Indonesia remained the country with the highest number of bird flu cases and fatalities. Since the outbreak first emerged in 2003, 137 people have died in Indonesia, while the virus has killed less than 300 people worldwide.
