Abu Dhabi: An Omani man diagnosed with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) coronavirus died in Abu Dhabi on Friday, an Abu Dhabi Government official said on Sunday.

The victim, 75, had been visiting Abu Dhabi in October when he was diagnosed with the virus. He was admitted to a public hospital for treatment but succumbed to the disease, the source told Gulf News.

Following his death, the patient’s body was repatriated to Oman.

The patient’s diagnosis with Mers was earlier confirmed to the World Health Organisation (WHO) by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi, the source added.

As reported by Gulf News, another Omani patient, who represents the first known case of the virus diagnosed in Oman, also died in the country’s northwest region on Sunday. He was 68 years old, and had been running a persistent fever before being diagnosed with Mers 12 days ago.

WHO Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) - update 11 November 2013

11 November 2013 - WHO has been informed of two additional laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia.

The first patient is a 72-year-old man from Riyadh with underlying medical conditions. He became ill on 23 October 2013, and has been hospitalised since 31 October 2013. The second patient is a 43-year-old man from Jeddah. He became ill on 27 October 2013 and has been hospitalised since 3 November 2013. 

Globally, from September 2012 to date, WHO has been informed of a total of 153 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 64 deaths.
Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns.

Muscat: The Ministry of Health has announced the first death in Oman on account of the Middle East Respiratory account of Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). 

A 68-year-old Omani citizen suffering from several chronic diseases including diabetes, blood pressure and heart failure, died at a hospital in Nizwa on Saturday morning. His health had also deteriorated due to lung failure. 

"The person had no history of travel but was in contact with his two sons-in-law who had returned from Haj. On October 29, he was suspected of suffering from viral pneumonia and tested positive for MERS-CoV," a senior official at the health ministry said.

Meanwhile, the tests carried out on all those who had contacted the victim showed negative results.

Precautions
The Ministry of Health said it has taken all precautionary measures in accordance with the recommendations and standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO), including the epidemiological investigation of contacts. 

Also, as part of the screening effort, authorities are working to track down healthcare workers who may have first attended to the 68-year-old patient at a local health centre before he was transferred to the Nizwa Hospital.

The objective, according to the officials, was to make sure that none of these contacts have been exposed to the deadly virus.

WHO has been informed of an additional laboratory-confirmed case of infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV in Qatar.

The patient is a 48-year-old man with underlying medical conditions.  He became ill on 25 October 2013 and was admitted to a hospital on 31 October 2013.  He is in currently in a critical condition.  Preliminary investigations reveal that he frequently visited animal barns.  The patient did not recently travel and has had no contact with a previously laboratory-confirmed case with MERS-CoV.

Globally, from September 2012 to date, WHO has been informed of a total of 151 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 64 deaths.

Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns.

Health care providers are advised to maintain vigilance. Recent travellers returning from the Middle East who develop SARI should be tested for MERS-CoV as advised in the current surveillance recommendations.

Patients diagnosed and reported to date have had respiratory disease as their primary illness. Diarrhoea is commonly reported among the patients and severe complications include renal failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with shock. It is possible that severely immunocompromised patients can present with atypical signs and symptoms.

Health care facilities are reminded of the importance of systematic implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC). Health care facilities that provide care for patients suspected or confirmed with MERS-CoV infection should take appropriate measures to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus to other patients, health care workers and visitors.

All Member States are reminded to promptly assess and notify WHO of any new case of infection with MERS-CoV, along with information about potential exposures that may have resulted in infection and a description of the clinical course. Investigation into the source of exposure should promptly be initiated to identify the mode of exposure, so that further transmission of the virus can be prevented.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event nor does it currently recommend the application of any travel or trade restrictions.

WHO has convened an Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations (IHR) to advise the Director-General on the status of the current situation. The Emergency Committee, which comprises international experts from all WHO Regions, unanimously advised that, with the information now available, and using a risk-assessment approach, the conditions for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) have not at present been met.

Health screening for Haj returnees at Bangalore airport #MERS #Coronavirus

Pilgrims being checked for symptoms of fever, cold, cough and respiratory problems

The Karnataka Health Department, based on an advisory received from the Union Ministry of Health, has been screening all Haj pilgrims returning after their sojourn in the Middle-East.

In coordination with the authorities of the Bengaluru International Airport Limited, the screening process is being enforced on the passengers arriving here from Saudi Arabia for symptoms of the Middle East Corona virus (MERS-CoV).

Geetha Nyamagowda, Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, said that the screening procedure had been on since November 5 and would conclude on November 13 , when the last batch of pilgrims would arrive. “We have a screening unit at the airport where we are checking the pilgrims for fever, cold, cough and respiratory problems.”

The department has not detected any case. R.T. Venkatesh, Deputy Director of health and family department, said that a man from Anantapur was found to have symptoms such as cold, cough and respiratory problem.

“As a precautionary measure, we sent him to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases. Since he insisted on returning to his hometown, we will request the A.P. health department to monitor his health status for the next 14 days.”

According to an official of the Haj Committee, 5,000 out of the 6,899 pilgrims in the State have returned from their pilgrimage.

A passenger who returned to the City after Haj has been diagnosed with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), which, though rare in India, has killed 63 people globally.
Bangalore International Airport health officials directed the person to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Chest Diseases in the city after finding her ill. 

Speaking to Deccan Herald, department of health and family welfare director Geetha Nyama Goudar said the patient was suspected of being affected and was coughing severely. 

“Though she was permitted to go home, we have informed the authorities to keep a check,” she added.

Rajiv Gandhi University of Chest Diseases and SDS Tuberculosis Research Centre Director Dr Shashidhar Buggi said the patient was brought to hospital on Sunday afternoon and preliminary tests conducted. 

“We have also taken the swabs and it will be sent to the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences on Monday for examination” he said. He said the patient showed symptoms similar to those affected by the H1N1 virus.  

“Though the patient was advised to get admitted, there was refusal from their side to do so,” Dr Buggi added. The resident of Ananthapur initially complained of sore throat and also had fever. The patient was normal and the condition did not appear to be serious, he said.

Dr Ravi, senior Pathologist at NIMHANS explained that MERS was a very rare condition and not more than ten cases in the country have been suspected of the virus so far. “It is more prevalent in the Middle East countries,” he said.     

As of October 13, 2013, the World Health Organisation confirmed that 149 people have been affected by MERS worldwide, of which 63 have died.

Guangdong culture of eating fresh chicken means it has to keep operating, official says

Guangdong will not close a wet market near where a three-year-old boy is confirmed this week to have contracted the H7N9 strain of bird flu, because authorities have to meet "the public's need to eat fresh chicken", a provincial health official says.

The provincial line contrasted sharply with action taken by Shanghai and other regions further north, which closed wet markets after H7N9 was found. The measure is believed to be the most effective in curbing the spread of the deadly virus.

Yesterday, Dr Zhang Yonghui, visiting director general of the Guangdong centre for disease and prevention, said: "We cannot close down the market as a consensus cannot be reached."

"The situation in Guangdong is different as there have been only sporadic cases so far. There is a traditional culture of eating fresh chicken in southern China, so we have to strike a balance." The boy, who lived in Dongguan , was confirmed on Tuesday to be infected with H7N9. He had visited a wet market with poultry stalls, but did not come into contact with any birds.

Abstract

During April 2013 in China, mild respiratory symptoms developed in 1/61 workers who had culled influenza A(H7N9) virus–infected poultry. Laboratory testing confirmed A(H7N9) infection in the worker and showed that the virus persisted longer in sputum than pharyngeal swab samples. Pharyngeal swab samples from the other workers were negative for A(H7N9) virus.
