Government issues Mexico travel warning

LONDON (Reuters) - The Foreign Office advised against all but essential travel to Mexico as a Scottish couple who recently returned from the country became the first in Britain to test positive for swine flu.

Newspapers named the couple as newlyweds Iain and Dawn Askham from Polmont, near Falkirk, who had been on honeymoon in the southeastern resort of Cancun.

They flew back to Scotland last week and are being treated in hospital in Airdrie, near Glasgow, Scotland's health minister Nicola Sturgeon told reporters in Edinburgh on Monday.

They are recovering well, she said.

Seven other people who came into contact with the two are receiving treatment for mild symptoms of the potentially deadly H1N1 virus.

"I am able to confirm to you this evening that the two suspected cases of swine flu in Scotland have been confirmed as positive," Sturgeon said.

"I am pleased to say that both individuals are recovering well in hospital."
