Taipei, April 27 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) raised the level of its travel alert for Mexico City to orange Monday, urging prospective travelers to defer their plans for the time being in light of an outbreak of human infections of swine flu there.

The ministry had originally issued a yellow travel alert for Mexico, the lowest level advisory that warns travelers to exercise caution.

However, the MOFA decided to raise the alert for Mexico's capital to orange, the second-highest level, in view of the latest reports that the swine flu outbreak is most serious in Mexico City and has spread to other parts of the world, MOFA officials said.

Moreover, they added, World Health Organizations (WHO) officials have warned that there is a potential for the new swine flu virus to become a global pandemic.

On the ministry's three-color travel advisory scale, an orange alert suggests that would-be travelers should suspend their travel plans over safety or health concerns.-snip-

In support of the ongoing global campaign to contain the spread of the new H1N1 swine flu virus and out of local health concerns, residents of Taiwan are advised to refrain from traveling to Mexico City for the time being, the officials warned.

Meanwhile, they said the MOFA will maintain its yellow alert for other areas and cities of Mexico, and urged would-be travelers to exercise a high degree of caution.
