Bangladesh sanctions egg imports
Bangladesh has allowed the import of eggs throughout the month of June in an attempt to level the price which has increased by 50% over the year. The import policy order says eggs will have to be imported from countries which are free from avian influenza and other similar diseases. Bangladesh Poultry Industry Coordination Committee Convenor, Moshiur Rahman said the government will have to ensure that no new diseases come to the country with the imported eggs. 'Since August last year we knew that egg production will see a massive gap. Had the government allowed us parent stock of chicken and vaccines, the situation might not have arisen,' he added. Bangladesh mainly imports eggs from India which, Bangladesh claims, is not out of danger of bird flu virus. The monthly demand of eggs in the country is between 600 - 650 million pieces.
