Health officials in rural Haiti are investigating a possible disease outbreak that could be responsible for dozens of deaths and a surge in hospital patients, U.N. aid workers said Wednesday

Officials are investigating an outbreak of diarrhoea in Haiti.

Reports say about 50 people have died after suffering acute fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Many more with similar symptoms have been admitted to hospitals north of the capital.

A senior UN health official told the BBC it was not clear what caused the outbreak. Test results are due later.

The country is still suffering the aftermath of January's quake which killed some 250,000 people.

It also left 1.5 million homeless.

An unnamed Haitian health official told AFP news agency the outbreak was cholera but the report could not be confirmed. The government was expected to make an announcement on the outbreak later on Thursday.

Fifty-four people had died and 619 people were ill, Yolaine Surena, a co-ordinator for Haiti's civil protection department was quoted as saying by AP news agency.

'No data'

Jessica DuPlessis, from the UN's humanitarian affairs agency, said the outbreak was centralised on the northern half of Haiti.

Many of the ill have been taken to St Nicholas hospital in the town of Saint-Marc, about 100km (60 miles) north of Port-au-Prince, medical officials said.

Hundreds of people lay outside St Nicholas in a parking lot, with intravenous drips in their arms to treat dehydration, until it began to rain and they were rushed inside, AP said.

The Pan American Health Organization (Paho) has sent two teams to the south of the Artibonite department, near Saint-Marc, a doctor with Paho told the BBC.

Little is known of the outbreak beyond "a high incidence of diarrhoea", said Dr Michel Thieren of Paho.

"Nothing can be verified at the moment. We have no numbers, no epidemiological data," he said.

The symptoms could be associated with a number of underlying diseases, he added.

There were fears of a cholera outbreak in the aftermath of the earthquake with many survivors forced into makeshift camps with unsanitary conditions and little access to clean drinking water, but there were no outbreaks, the World Health Organization says.

The Artibonite department was not badly damaged in the earthquake but a number of people who lost their homes took shelter there and many have not left.

Cholera is spread through people consuming water or food contaminated with cholera bacteria. The source of contamination is usually the faeces of infected people.

It causes diarrhoea and vomiting leading to dehydration and can kill quickly if left untreated. It is easily treated though rehydration and antibiotics, however.

New strain of swine flu emerges - report

The H1N1 swine flu virus may be starting to mutate, and a slightly new form has begun to predominate in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, researchers reported on Thursday.

More study is needed to tell whether the new strain is more likely to kill patients and whether the current vaccine can protect against it completely, said Ian Barr of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Melbourne, Australia and colleagues.

"However, it may represent the start of more dramatic antigenic drift of the pandemic influenza A(H1N1) viruses that may require a vaccine update sooner than might have been expected," they wrote in the online publication Eurosurveillance.

It is possible it is both more deadly and also able to infect people who have been vaccinated, they said.

Flu viruses mutate constantly -- this is why people need a fresh flu vaccine every year. Since it broke out in March 2009 and spread globally, the H1N1 swine flu virus has been very stable with almost no mutation.

"The virus has changed little since it emerged in 2009, however, in this report we describe several genetically distinct changes in the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus," Barr's team wrote in the report, available at http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=19692.

"These variants were first detected in Singapore in early 2010 and have subsequently spread through Australia and New Zealand."

The changes are not significant yet, they said. But there have been some cases of people who were vaccinated also becoming infected, and also some deaths.

"Already this variant virus has been associated with several vaccine breakthroughs in teenagers and adults vaccinated in 2010 with monovalent pandemic influenza vaccine (protecting against only H1N1) as well as a number of fatal cases from whom the variant virus was isolated," they wrote.

But there is not enough information to tell whether there may have been other factors making the patients more vulnerable, they stressed...

Haitian government officials say at least 19 people have died after suffering brief bouts of fever, vomiting and severe diarrhea, with dozens of more deaths suspected. Most are reportedly children.

Hundreds of patients reporting those symptoms have overwhelmed a hospital in the seaside town of St. Marc, some 45 miles (about 70 kilometers) north of the capital of Port-au-Prince, Catherine Huck, country deputy for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told The Associated Press.

U.N. and Haitian health care workers are running tests for cholera, typhoid and other diseases, with results possible on Thursday, said OCHA-Haiti spokeswoman Jessica DuPlessis.

India-Nine more die due to viral fever

LUCKNOW: Even as entire district administration worked overnight at Khadra locality from where 27 deaths due to viral fever have been reported in last five days, the deadly fever continued to play havoc in the city claiming at least nine more lives on Wednesday.

The dead included Pradeep (22), Dayaram (30), Rohit (21), Jugram (42), Kamla (38), Khazan Singh (40) and Dhanuram (33) -- all under-treatment in various government hospitals. While 2-year-old Alisha suffering from the viral fever died in Hussainganj, Alisha (8) died in Yaseenganj.

A team of senior officials led by principal secretary, health, visited Khadra locality twice during the day to supervise health services. Blood samples of over 900 persons suffering from fever were collected from the locality for malaria test. The tests of 500 were complete but none were found to be positive for malaria.

However, no action has been taken against the 12-odd illegal dairies operating in Khadra. These dairies are the main source of filth and choked drains in the area, resulting in outbreak of the deadly fever.

Experts raised questions over health department's move to test malaria. They said that the deaths could have been caused due to other viruses. "We have observed change in the viral fever pattern. Earlier, it used to last for a week but this time it is taking 18-20 days time. Also, the viral fever is showing dengue like symptoms but the dengue diagnostic test is negative. This means that the virus has changed its strain," they added.

Following the objections, the health department on Wednesday started taking blood samples to test for other viruses as well.

On the other hand the two-member inquiry committee comprising experts from CSM Medical University started its probe to ascertain the exact cause of death. However, sources said that it would be very difficult for the experts to find out the cause of the death as they have no clinical material to reach a conclusion.

Ten mobile teams of doctors have also been constituted to carry out relief measures in case of sudden outbreak of disease in any locality of the city. The doctors in the team have been drawn from the Balrampur Hospital, SPM Hospital and RML Hospital. The teams will provide on the spot treatment, distribute medicines and arrange for hospitalisation of serious cases.

Prof AK Vaish, head department of medicine, CSM Medical University said that people should not panic and take preventive measures to combat viral fever.

Villagers fear outbreak of bird flu

TANGKAK: Villagers in Kampung Parit Medan are worried over a possible outbreak of bird flu virus following the sighting of the carcasses of hundreds of swiftlets and chickens in their village here.

What shocked the witnesses was that some birds that were perched on an electric cable suddenly fell to the ground and died.

On Oct 11, resident Norodin Badri, 51, said he stumbled upon the mysterious death of swiftlets when he came out of a mosque at 4.30pm.

"I saw a group of swiftlets in various places near the mosque, such as at the playground and by the side of the mosque, and suddenly the birds, about 200 of them, just fell to the ground and died."

Norodin said some of the residents believed that the swiftlets had been struck by lightning.

In the following days, over 20 kampung chickens were found dead outside a house.

Meanwhile, a check with the Johor Department of Environment revealed that a rise in air pollution due to the hazy weather could have contributed to the mysterious deaths.
