Taiwan confirmed the first outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza March 3 after chicken farms in Changhua and Nantou counties, as well as in Tainan, reported avian flu outbreaks. This is the kind of news that makes me feel better, not just because of the possibility that an emerging H5 strain might not cause symptomatic disease in humans. But, it demonstrates a motion toward the level of interest and surveillance that can bring humanity toward a truly better state of understanding.
