Avian influenza - situation in China - update #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

The Ministry of Health of China has notified WHO of a human case of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection.‬‪

The case is a 39 year-old male from Guiyan City, Guizhou Province. He developed symptoms on 6 January 2012 and was admitted to hospital but was in critical condition and died on 22 January 2012.‬‪
The case was laboratory diagnosed by Guizhou CDC and confirmed by China CDC on 22 January 2012. Investigation into the source of infection is ongoing. Close contacts of the case are being monitored and to date all remain well.  http://www.who.int/csr/don/2012_01_24/en/index.html‬‪

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A hospitalized man in southwestern China died of avian flu, health officials in Beijing reported Sunday.The unidentified 39-year-old man came down with a fever and other symptoms of the highly contagious H5N1 virus Jan. 6, but didn't respond to intensive care treatment in the city of Guiyang, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.
Regional health officials tracked down 71 people with whom the man had been in contact prior to his diagnosis, but none of them tested positive for the flu, the report said.
The deadly virus originated in poultry and wild birds, but is also spread among humans.

KBR68H - Government of Hong Kong lowers bird flu pandemic alert status, the level of serious or else down to the level of alert. The new status came into force this Thursday. With this status, it is no longer ban on importing and trading of live poultry from outside Hong Kong, especially from the Chinese mainland. Previous trade of live poultry was suspended for three weeks, after the discovery of cases of dead birds infected with H5N1 virus. Description of the Hong Kong health authorities said, the researchers did not find any mutation of the H5N1 virus ever discovered three years ago. The decline of this bird flu alert status to be good news for the citizens of Hong Kong in particular will welcome Chinese New Year Feast on 23 January. (AFP)

Lifting the 21-Day Ban of Import/Sale of Live Poultry in China

Live chicken may be bound for local dinner plates again as early as tomorrow.

That is the hope after food and health chief York Chow Yat-ngok said he will consult with bird flu experts today before announcing whether to lift the 21-day ban on the import and sale of live chickens, imposed on December 21.

Chow said he expects demand for fresh chicken to increase once the ban is lifted, especially with Lunar New Year festivities around the corner.

He sees daily sales rising from 7,000 before the ban to about 10,000.

The ban, whose planned period expires tomorrow, was imposed after a dead chicken at the Cheung Sha Wan poultry market was found to be infected with the H5N1 virus.
