Chile: Influenza A H1N1 in turkeys in Region Five

The Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) detected the presence of H1N1 virus at two farms in the region of Valparaiso, to take immediate precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure the health of the population.

This finding came after the August 13, the producer of turkeys Sopraval SA communicate the agency's fall production of eggs in 2 farms in the region, which started the implementation of the protocols in place to address this issue.

Immediately and in close collaboration with the private sector, was established as a precautionary measure the quarantine farm and mitigation measures that included increasing the biosafety of people in the facilities involved and the control of movement of birds and testing laboratories prevent the spread of the disease.

So on Wednesday 19 August, ruled out the presence of Avian Influenza (H5N1 influenza), confirming the presence of an influenza virus subtype H1N1, which is common in turkeys.

This afternoon was identified that this corresponded to the virus subtype H1N1 2009, which is being communicated to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The implementation of protocols and prevention and control measures in line with the recommendations of relevant international agencies in these matters, to guarantee the public that turkey meat and its products are marketed both in domestic and international markets, are fully capable for human consumption.

SAG calls on citizens to consume with confidence and peace of turkey products. In addition, active surveillance program that this service remains in the country to suggest that there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the territory.
