Vietnam: 1.1 million to get swine flu vaccine

(08-01-2010)

HA NOI — More than 1.1 million people will be vaccinated against swine flu this month, using supplies provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The Ministry of Health said priority would be given to those over 18, women pregnant for at least four months, and health staff in direct contact with flu patients or medical waste.

At present, 780,000 people in 49 cities and provinces are on the vaccination list. About 740 are pregnant women.

The ministry said those allergic to eggs or any of the vaccine’s ingredients should not be vaccinated.

Director of the Drug Administration of Viet Nam Truong Quoc Cuong said WHO would donate 1.5 million Tamiflu pills.

The health ministry has also ordered 1 million Tamiflu half strength pills for children from Roche Pharmaceutical Company in Switzerland. It has also bought 10,000 boxes of Relenza, another swine-flu drug, in case Tamiflu resistance occurs.

So far, a total of 11,112 swine flu cases have been reported in Viet Nam, of which 53 were fatal. — VNS
