The World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday 28 May, a 10 year old girl died of bird flu (H5N1) in Cambodia. This is the third death from the disease this year in the country.

The victim, living in Kampong Speu province (Southwest), became ill on May 20 It would have contracted the disease by preparing chickens infected with the virus.
The girl is the twenty-first infected person in Cambodia with the H5N1 virus. It is the nineteenth person to die from complications of this disease since 2003.

THREE HUNDRED DEATHS SINCE 2003

China had announced in late December, the first death from bird flu in eighteen months in the country, raising fears of a resurgence of the disease, which killed more than 300 deaths worldwide since 2003.

H5N1 spreads from animals to humans, but scientists fear that a mutation does allow contamination from human to human, which could trigger a pandemic.
