Government, private and community representatives from West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara and Bali provinces are participating at the three-day workshop.

"We can never be fully prepared for a global pandemic, but we can do our best to reduce the impact of such an event and in doing so save lives," said Mr. Krisnamurthi.
"It is important that all sectors have a plan in place," said Mr. Krisnamurthi. Should the pandemic emerges in Indonesia or a neighboring ASEAN country we can expect tens of thousands of people to be affected here. It would severely challenge both the government and private sector. Hospitals would be overrun with patients and schools and businesses would be forced to close. If that happens we need to decide how food and water will be distributed. We must look at how to maintain security and how we can maintain power, gas and telephone services. These are questions each sector must answer." he added.
The three-day workshop includes participants from Bali and NTT and is being hosted by the NTB provincial government .The project is part of UNICEF's pandemic preparedness program which is funded by the Canadian international Development Agency, CIDA.

"We don't know when or where an outbreak will strike but experts agree we are due. That's why we must urge all public and private sectors to be prepared." added Mr.Krisnamurthi.
The Indonesian government has developed a pandemic preparedness plan in line with the global pandemic strategy. Indonesia works with the UN and other international agencies to mitigate the impact.

(KPL) Oudomsay province has expressed satisfaction on efforts made by various sectors in avian flu control and prevention.
Relevant officials in the province, last Wednesday, held a meeting to evaluate avian flu control and prevention in the province in last year and lay out plan on such efforts for 2008-2009 fiscal year.
The event was co-chaired by Head of Oudomsay Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Service, Vice President of Avian Flu Control and Prevention Committee, Mr. Nenevien Vongsith.
Deputy Office Head of Foreign Affair Ministry, Nilahat Sayalath, representative from the National Avian-Human Influenza Coordination Office (NAHICO) and relevant officials attended the event.
The participants also learned four measures on avian flu to be implemented in this fiscal year such as poultry breeding control system, avian flu surveillance and emergency response by relevant officials, avian flu analysis and treatment for patients and health education and community participation in avian flu control and prevention.
Mr. Nanvien called the participants to pay more attention to avian influenza prevention and control and realise the plan or measures on avian flu for 2008-2009 period.

Bogor is a small town located about 40 km south of Jakarta.
Based on the two articles below, it appears that two patients - sisters - died last week from that area after being admitted to Persahabatan Hospital, in East Jakarta.
Both were `strongly suspected' of being infected with the bird flu virus. Health officials, according to the second article, are taking blood samples in the area.
Contacts of the victims were provided with Tamiflu.
If any results of these tests are known, they haven't been disclosed by the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, Health service of Bogor took blood sample of people around the bird flu victims neighborhood who died last week (1/16), Nurul Hikmah and her sister Ruslani (30), the residents of Cilendek barat RT 3/8, Cimanggu Barata Bogor.
Blood samples are examined by Research and Development Laboratory of Healt Ministry and Eijkman Institute. This is the first time bird flu case is found in Bogor.
Nurul Hikmah died after 2 days treatment at isolation unit of Persahabatn hospital. She was treated at Karya Bakti Bogor hospital before admitted to Persahabatan hospital. Nurul died after developing respiratory failure and worsening lung function. Medical record showed dark spots in her lung.
Bird flu District Surveillance Officer, Health service Bogor Dwi Sutanto said that victim buried at the same night she died.
“While waiting laboratory test result, we gave Tamiflu to everyone who had contact to the patient. Including Karya Bhakti and Persahabatan hospital medics and victim’s family”, he said.

But he said there is no evidence to suggest birds can carry the H5N1 virus without showing symptoms of the disease, and that the chances of "silent" carriers are minimal.
"If we look at the eight human cases of bird flu in the mainland, the majority were the result of exposure to sick or dying birds," he said. "There was contact, and it wasn't simply exposure to live animals that displayed no symptoms.
"We have not found evidence as yet that animals can survive [bird flu] without showing symptoms."
Nevertheless, he said the eight cases are of concern "as this has been the highest occurrence within a narrow timeframe since the first mainland case was documented in 2003."
Regarding the lack of an outbreak among poultry before human infection, Ho said a likely explanation is that most animals have already been immunized, but that vaccines are not always 100 percent effective.
He believes measures should be stepped up to prevent cross-border
infection and poultry smuggling by boat, especially with many travelers returning from the mainland after the Lunar New Year holiday.
"Prevention is more important than surveillance," he said.
He also encouraged the government to speed up vaccination research with the mainland.
Health chief Chow also made reference to the discovery last Thursday of two geese and one duck found dead on Sha Lo Wan beach on Lantau.
All were confirmed to have been infected with H5N1.
He said investigations are centered on whether the birds had been dumped there by individuals who owned poultry or whether they had died in the mainland and been washed ashore.
Chow also requested mainland officials to investigate whether there have been any bird flu outbreaks along the Pearl River Delta.
There are no poultry farms or live poultry within a three-kilometer radius of Sha Lo Wan.
Islands district councillor Chau Chuen-heung said that, within the vicinity of Sha Lo Wan, it is unlikely that villagers are keeping backyard poultry - a once common practice that has since been banned.

Three of four of the latest avian flu outbreaks in Canada have been in the Fraser Valley, possibly because of the region's popularity with migratory waterfowl, experts say.
In the latest outbreak, that H5 strain of the virus was detected in some turkeys on a property owned by two brothers last month and 60,000 turkeys were culled on an Abbotsford farm last week.
Tests indicate the virus has not spread to any other poultry producers within a quarantine zone of about two miles, but the Washington Department of Agriculture increased tests for the virus at 13 farms in Whatcom County, a few miles to the south, as a precaution.
Washington has never had a confirmed case of bird flu, even in 2004, when the Fraser Valley was hit by a highly contagious H7-type flu. Farm after farm was quarantined and in the end about 15 million birds - almost the entire poultry population in the valley - was destroyed.
In the second Fraser Valley outbreak, two duck farms were infected with the H5N2 strain of the virus in November 2005.
Canada's only bird flu outbreak outside the region was in 2007, when a highly pathogenic H7N3 strain was found in Saskatchewan on a farm that produced hatching eggs to produce broiler chickens.
Ronald J. Lewis, the province's chief veterinary officer, and Sandra Stephens, veterinary program specialist with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, suspect the culprits in British Columbia are mainly migratory birds.
"We're on the Pacific flyway, so there are lots of birds passing through every year," Lewis said, "and we know wild waterfowl carry a variety of different strains of avian influenza."
In addition, people can easily walk over the areas where wild waterfowl have been, Lewis adds, "and we know avian influenza has some capability of aerosol transmission."
Avian influenza virus is prolific and when wild waterfowl have it "they shed tremendous numbers of viral particles," Stephens said. "All these birds, when they get to their summer or wintering grounds, they co-mingle."
Nor are North America's flyways altogether isolated, she added.
"Although you tend to think of the North American flyways as being separate from Europe and Asia, in fact there is some crossover in the northern breeding grounds," Stephens said.
The concentration of commercial poultry producers in the Fraser Valley is also a factor in the outbreaks, she added.
Although any poultry producer can be exposed to migratory birds, "where we have more concerns are areas like the Fraser Valley or the Niagara Peninsula where there are large concentrations of poultry farms close together," she said.
Calvin Breukelman of the British Columbia Poultry Association estimates there are about 600 poultry producers in the Fraser Valley, an industry worth close to $1 billion Canadian, chiefly because of the proximity to the Vancouver metropolitan area.
"In an ideal world we of course wouldn't have this concentration, but it's not ideal and we have to do whatever we can to reduce the impact of that concentration," Lewis said.
Despite the outbreaks, Lewis said it was highly unlikely that the region would be hit with the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus that killed hundreds of people in Asia, Africa and Europe.
"We don't have that kind of proximity (of large numbers of humans) to wild and commercial ducks, cohabiting in many cases, that is present in those countries," he said.
He also cited prevention measures adopted by Canada after the 2004 outbreak. He estimated compliance at about 98 percent of the industry.
Initial testing for avian viruses can now be done in Abbotsford, "so we have eliminated the delays in having to ship samples for testing at the federal lab," Lewis added.
