Kathmandu , Aug 10 At least 264 people have been killed due to the epidemic of diarrohea in western Nepalese districts in the last three months, a Health Ministry official has said.
Jajarkot district is the most affected by the disease, with 144 deaths followed by Rukum with 46 deaths, according to Health Ministry official Bishwo Raj Khanal.
The remaining 74 people died in a dozen other districts of western Nepal, where the government has mobilised a large number of health workers, police, army personnel and volunteers and treated some 50,000 people over the past one month, the official said. Poor sanitation, contaminated drinking water and lack of health facilities including medical professionals and medicines have been attributed for the diarrohea related deaths.
In Sindhuli district in eastern Nepal, some 5 people have died due to unknown disease, the official said. Sudden fever and vomiting blood are the symptoms found in the people affected by the unidentified disease in the remote district.
The government has dispatched medical teams and medicines to the affected area from the centre.
The Health Ministry has issued nationwide alert against cholera and diarrohea as the diseases could spread to other parts of the country as well due to poor sanitation and unhygienic drinking water.
