The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of a case of avian influenza or bird flu in that country.
According to a WHO Global Alert and Response issued Thursday, the patient is a four-year-old female from Kfr -Elsheikh governorate.
The child developed symptoms on 25 April 2012, was admitted to a hospital on 26 April 2012 and received oseltamivir treatment upon admission. She was discharged from the hospital on 7 May 2012.
Epidemiologic investigation revealed the child was exposed to backyard poultry.
The Central Public Health Laboratories and the Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) confirmed the case as avian influenza A(H5N1).
This case is the 10th in Egypt this year. Of the ten, half of the cases ended in death...
