In light of the current outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Scotland, our Environmental Health Team has issued a reminder to local businesses to ensure preventative measures are in place.Businesses that operate a wet cooling tower are reminded of the importance of ensuring that control measures for the prevention of legionella within their systems are scrupulously followed so as not to present a risk to the public.
Specific guidance can be found within the Health and Safety Executive document: "L8: Legionnaires' disease - the control of legionella bacteria in water systems" - which can be viewed using the link below.
This recommends a weekly check for microbiological activity (TVC) and a quarterly check for Legionella to confirm that controls are all working correctly.
Although there is no reported incidence in the Wycombe district currently, officers will be verifying with businesses that have a registered system that these controls are in place and being followed.
All wet cooling towers and evaporative condensers are required to be registered with us. Details on how to register can be found on our cooling towers page.
