Meghalaya to complete culling of birds today

Shillong: Meghalaya administration today said culling of bird-flu infected fowls would be completed by Wednesday.
"There are four villages within three km from the epicentre for which culling of all fowls is mandatory as per Government of India guidelines," state Veterinary director L Lyngwa told today.
Until last evening, more than 3444 fowls and more than 1200 eggs were subjected to hygienic culling in East Garo Hills district including those from the government-run farm where the flu broke out a week ago.
According to Lyngwa, culling is expected to be completed by tomorrow evening.
He said, nearly Rs 3.6 lakh has been given to affected poultry farmers as per government's instruction hiking compensation from Rs 50 (GoI rate) upto Rs 250 per adult fowl.

District administrator Pravin Bakshi said, Rapid Response Teams (RRT) are quarantined and kept together in one place.
Fifteen temporary toilets, blankets, mattresses, pick-up trucks, food, vehicles, earth movers have been arranged for the culling and mopping operations.
Bakshi said, RRT officials would be left in quarantined confinements for another ten days after the last bird is culled.

The district, with a population density of 122 inhabitants per square km, has a population of about 3.17 lakh persons as per 2011 census.
