Whereas many of the adverse effects of H5N1 infection are due to overreaction by the immune system, it makes sense that a very young infant would likely recover. When they are infected at birth, their immune systems respond to the virus as if it is endemic in humans rather than emerging, and so there is no overreacting cytokine storm as in adults. It's the same thing as when a child suffers little from chicken pox or measles, but adults catching these illnesses for the first time in their lives had better lay flat on their back.
