Bangladesh-Bird flu affected chickens being supplied to local markets #H5N1 #BIRDFLU
Dhaka, Saturday February 4, 2012
Bird flu affected chickens are being supplied to the local markets due to lack
of monitoring and proper policy support to the poultry farmers by the authority,
said sector insiders.
They said the farmers are selling their infected chickens in the markets hiding the information as the government does not compensate the farmers adequately.
The experts warned that if sick poultry birds are supplied to the markets it will create a severe health hazard to the people as it is very contagious and harmful for humans.
The outbreak of bird flu this season is the highest since the first appearance of the disease in the country according to the Bangladesh Poultry Industries' Association (BPIA).
The farmers said almost everyday new farms are being attacked by the avian influenza (bird flu). Last week a good number of poultry farms in Netrokona, Kishorganj, Pabna, Brahamanbaria, Feni, Cox's Bazar, Bogra have been affected by the virus.
Maximum number of poultry farms in the country has been affected by the bird flu, said BPIA Joint Secretary General Khandokar Mohsin. "Normally the disease breaks out in the beginning of winter and now it is the end of the season".
BPIA Joint Secretary General said though the government has allocated compensation for the bird flu affected poultry farms, it is very insufficient and irregular.
He also said the authority does not include many of the bird flu affected farms in the list for compensation. So usually the poultry farmers do not report to the department of livestock and incur loss, he added.
The government has allocated Tk 20.0 million in the current fiscal year to compensate for the bird flu affected farms but until now the farm owners did not get any money.
"Due to financial crises many professional and skilled poultry farmers have closed their business last year," he added.
"It is really a fearful situation for our health sector but the government is lingering the problem from several years," said, Kazi Farms chairman and Bangladesh Breeders Association ex President Kazi Jahidul Hasan.
The country's largest poultry producer said Bangladesh is one of the critical five bird flu affected countries in the world which is yet to introduce it vaccine.
But other most risky countries like India, Vietnam, China and Egypt introduced vaccine to prevent the disease, he added.
The the is gradually becoming chronic in the local poultry sector, said Mr Hasan adding that as the government's method for bio-security have already failed, the authority should introduce vaccine to prevent the disease immediately.
He also mentioned that the production of baby chickens decreased sharply due to outbreak of bird flu.
Chairman of Microbiology Department of Dhaka University Dr Anwar Hossain said though the virus does not remain in cooked meat but those who are handling the live chickens and fresh meats will be affected by the virus.
He also warned that if bird flu virus and normal influenza virus mixes, it can create a new mutiliated virus and may be very harmful.
"So there is no alternative but to isolate of the chicken to protect the health of the people from the disease," he added.
Department of Livestock Services control room officials said 51,757 chickens were culled while 22,649 eggs were destroyed in January this year in five farms located in Manikganj, Dhaka, Sirajgonj and Narayanganj due to the outbreak of bird flu.
According to the BPIA, the country had 114,763 poultry farms in 2009 but following the spread of bird flu, the farms reduced to 74,000 in 2010 and 64,000 in 2011.
The authorities culled nearly 0.579 million chickens while it destroyed about 570,000 eggs from 171 poultry farms across the country last year.
Department of Livestock Services Director Dr Musaddique Hossain said for preventing the disease the department has already taken up various initiatives.
"We have taken awareness creating programmes and trained the poultry farmers how to save their chickens the flu," he said.

Death of fowls spark off bird flu scare in Odisha #H5N1 #BIRDFLU
PTI | 04:01 PM,Jan 22,2012
Malkangiri (Odisha), Jan 22 (PTI) The death of a large number of birds at several places in this tribal district of Odisha has triggered a bird flu scare, especialy with villagers throwing carcasses in the open. Hundreds of dead birds including crows, storks, pigeons and mynahs were seen in many villages under Malkangiri and Korkunda blocks during the last week.
"We just received a report about death of birds. A team of veterinarians rushed to the area to initiate remedial measures," chief district veterinary officer Rabi Narayan Behera said. Meanwhile, due to lack of awareness, fear stricken people threw carcasses in the open which were then devoured by stray dogs and other animals. "No step has been taken by the district administration to create awareness among the people on dealing with bird carcasses.
Ignorant villagers throw them here and there, causing health hazards in the area," said village president of MV-20 Subash Banarjee. Bird Flu: More surveillance underway
Saturday, January 14, 2012
(Bird flu update) Following the outbreak of bird flu in Changedaphu, popularly known as Kala Bazaar, medicines are being distributed to the people who came in contact with the dead poultry birds and their products. More surveillance is being conducted within three kilometre radius of the area.Over 90 people have come in contact with the dead birds.
The officials from health and livestock have given health education and have disinfected the place.
The coops were being dismantled and sprayed with disinfectant. It was then burned to prevent the bird flu from spreading. The people, those who have consumed the dead and sick birds are being given Tami flu, the only drug available to treat this flu.
The Technical Focal Person for Avian influenza, Dr. Gosar Pemba, said that they took the samples from those people who were showing some signs of the disease. He added that it is too early to say as it could be normal flu, cough, sneezing and fever. “From these people we are taking samples and take it in our laboratory and see if any one of them has infection.”
Rapid test have shown negative results.

Meanwhile, more than 140 birds have been culled, 190 eggs destroyed belonging to 48 poultry owners.
This is the first case of bird flu outbreak recorded in the capital. Specialists suspect the recent outbreak in Tshimasham to be the source of the outbreak.
The culling process lasted at least four hours. According to the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority’s (BAFRA) specialist J.B Gurung, the culling operation was carried out late night as the affected area is within the city and it could pose a high risk for human health.
The Director General of the Department of Livestock, Tenzin Dendhup, says 38 birds have died. Another eleven birds are sick.
According to BAFRA’s Director General disinfection of vehicles and strict monitoring of imports of poultry and poultry products by BAFRA at various entry points will resume. http://www.bbs.com.bt/bbs/?p=8318

Bhutan-Bird flu hits Thimphu #H5N1 #BIRDFLU

and the ban re-imposed after an outbreak in Orissa, India
Changedaphu (Kalabazar) A bird flu outbreak in Thimphu was confirmed yesterday afternoon after the deaths of 38 chickens in the past week at the camp in Changedaphu (Kalabazar).
Another 11 were found sick. These birds are from five houses that had 49 birds in all. The National Centre for Animal Health in Serbithang confirmed the outbreak.
By last evening, a team of officials from the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), the livestock department, health, police and city officials had dug a two-feet deep pit to dispose the culled birds.
An emergency meeting of the National Incident Command Centre (NICC) for bird flu was held yesterday following the deaths.
The culling began last night after the team reached Thimphu from Tshimasham. “Since the place is within the city it could pose a high risk for human health although this is the first case in the city,” officials said.
Livestock officials said the birds had started dying since January 8, but were informed by the residents only on January 12, after the death of two birds, which tested positive for bird flu.
Dairy division chief with the livestock department and the spokesperson for bird flu, Dr Tashi Dorji, said the residents had already buried nine dead birds.
The disease, according to Dr Tashi Dorji, is similar to a disaster, with no treatment besides culling. “The H5N1 virus infects humans as well, and people should avoid eating eggs and chicken from the flu-affected areas,” he said.
While the investigation to find the source of infection is on, officials suspect the flu could have spread from Tshimasham, where the flu outbreak was first reported. “Tshimasham could be a possible source, and it could also be wild birds, such as pigeons,” Dr Tashi Dorji said.
The team will start spraying disinfectant today at the junction of Kuenselphodrang and Kalabazar. Areas around Thimphu such as Samarzingkha, Police camp, RICB, Hospital area, Upper Changzamtog are considered high risk areas.
There are 17,144 birds alone under Thimphu Dzongkhag excluding those in the city area as per the poultry population report, 2011.
Meanwhile, just three days after the six-month ban on the import of poultry and poultry products from India was lifted, the ban is re-imposed following an outbreak of bird flu at Orissa, India. All BAFRA permits related to poultry and poultry products that have been granted to date will be considered cancelled. http://www.kuenselonline.com/2011/?p=25054
