Kurban Sheikh of bird flu-hit Madhya Satgharia village suffers from high fever and cold
Kolkata: Kurban Sheikh Ali, 44, a daily labourer of Madhya Satgharia village in Malda district of West Bengal, has been suffering from severe cold, fever and sore eyes for the last one month. The family used to own 12 chicken, which died days before bird flu was confirmed.

Ali said, “I have not gone to work for three weeks. We visited the village quack and then went to Malda town to consult a specialist.

Our body temperatures go up, mostly in the evening, and medicines are of no use.” Even his father, mother and 3 children have been suffering from similar symptoms for the last one month. Noor Bibi, Kurban’s mother, said, “Our eyes too are watery, like that of the birds suffering from flu.”

In total, 14 people have been identified in Satgharia village with the same symptoms and a medical team is expected to visit the village on Wednesday to collect their blood samples.

District Magistrate Sridhar Ghosh said blood samples of some villagers has been collected and that they are waiting for the result of medical reports.

Meanwhile, culling operations have gone haywire because the culling team was ill-equipped and villagers thwarted their attempts by hiding the ir birds.

“The villagers resisted culling operations as the spot-payment system was not ready,” an Animal Resource Development official said.
