Nigeria: States, LGAs Asked to Combat Bird Flu

Gombe — States and local governments yet to experience the outbreak of the dreaded Avian Bird Influenza have been told to intensify efforts to ensure the disease does not encroach on their domain.

Mr. J.O. Akeredolu, Co-ordinator, Avian Influenza Committee, Federal Ministry of Information, Abuja, made this appeal during a recent visit to Gombe State.

Records made available to newsmen by J.O. Akerelodu indicates that only 97 local governments which cut across 26 states out of the 774 local governments in the 36 states and Abuja have recorded the presence of the disease commonly referred to as 'bird flu'.

A tabulated summary of outbreak record titled 'Hpai Outbreak In Nigeria From Inception To Date' rated Kano, Katsina and Lagos States as the worst hit with cases recorded in nine local government areas.

This is followed by Anambra, Kaduna and Ogun States with cases in six LGA's respectively while five local government areas in Adamawa, Bauchi and Edo States have according to the report, recorded outbreaks.
