Brisbane Flu to Hit Bulgaria at Holiday Time

7 December 2008, Sunday

A flu epidemic is likely to hit Bulgaria around the Christmas and the New Year holidays, Doctor Angel Kunchev, Head of the "Contagious Deceases Monitoring" Department at the Health Ministry reported, cited by the Bulgarian information agency BGNES.

The flu variety is known as "Brisbane".

Kunchev explained that they already had several people officially listed as having the virus, which was discovered for the first time last year in Australia.

The doctor pointed out that the virus was most likely to "fly" to Bulgaria with Bulgarians working abroad, who would come home for the Holidays.

"Brisbane" is known to inflict serious damages on the respiratory organs and is accompanied by high fever, muscle and head aches. If the illness is left untreated, it could lead to serious complications including bronchitis and pneumonia.
