Manipur sounds high alert following bird flu in Assam

Imphal, Dec 9: The Manipur government had imposed a complete ban on the import of poultry products to prevent the outbreak of the deadly Avian Influenza in Assam.

The State Veterinary department had asked security personnel on National Highways (NH) 39 and 53 to stop the entry of poultry products.

The state government was forced to take up measures to check the outbreak of the disease, as the state had already experienced its outbreak last year.

State Veterinary Director Th Dorendro today said, ''Bird flu was detected at Chingmeirong, Imphal East, in July and culling of chicken as carried within a radius of five kilometers from the place where the first case was detected. Lakh of chickens were culled and buried”.

Veterinary officials said there was no ban on sales and consumption of chicken throughout the state and special measures would also be taken up in the international border areas, especially at Moreh, the main trading centre of Manipur and Myanmar.
