Bird flu alert sounded in Assam


Sept 10: Bird flu virus was today confirmed to have been detected in Assam’s Dhubri district, where culling of birds have already started.

District veterinary department officials confirmed the outbreak of the avian flu in Agomoni area of the district, bordering Bangladesh.

Blood samples and carcasses were sent for testing at Guwahati and Bhopalafter a large number of chickens were mysteriously found dead in the area.

The test reports that came in late last evening confirmed avian flu as the cause of the death of the birds.

Culling of about 30,000 birds in 14 villages have been so far ordered and is expected to be completed within two-three days. Compensation to over 3000 families will be paid in the first round of culling. There are no reports of the virus spreading to other parts of the State yet. (UNI)
