KOHORA, Jan 23
– In view of recovery of about 10 to 12 carcasses of halika birds at Hatipathar
picnic spot under Karbi Anglong at Kohora two days back, the authorities have
closed the picnic spot till January 26 citing special measures for cleaning up
the garbage left by picnic revellers to
ensure that not a single bird dies by consuming the garbage.
It is worth mentioning that the post mortem report suggested that the birds
died due to consumption of fermented food
items mixed with plastic, which led to formation of gastroenteritis and infected the digestive system of the birds that ultimately proved fatal.
Wildlife experts at Kaziranga feel that
Kaziranga being an Important Bird Area (IBA), the authorities concerned
including those of Kaziranga National Park
and forest of Karbi Anglong must ensure that no picnic revellers are allowed to
come to the place in and around Kaziranga and leave without cleaning the
garbage. In fact, authorities must put big hoardings mentioning clearly the Do’s
and Don’ts to make the public aware about the importance of wildlife including
the avifauna.
Veterinary doctors of Wildlife Rescue
Centre of Kaziranga under Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), have categorically said
that there is no sign and symptoms of bird flu as suspected by some quarters.
