Bird flu alert in Meghalaya

NEW DELHI: With over three lakh poultry birds culled in Assam in the wake of the bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) outbreak in Kamrup and five more districts, the neighbouring Meghalaya has been put on high alert. Borders sealed

Already West Bengal has sealed its borders following reports of unusual mortality of 50 birds in Malda district on Sunday. Samples have been sent to the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Kolkata as well as to Bhopal.

A high-level team of officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying returned here after inspecting the culling operations and reviewing the situation in Assam.

Sources said Christmas demand in Meghalaya raised fears of smuggling in of poultry and turkey from Assam. The State government was asked to seal its borders.
