Multi-pronged strategy to check bird flu in Kamrup dist under way

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 – As a precautionary step to check the spread of avian flu in Kamrup Metro area, the district health society is adopting multi-pronged strategies for public awareness.

In order to avoid epidemic like situation in the district - after the onset of the flu in some parts the district - the district programme management unit of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has undertaken many activities in urban as well as rural areas of the district under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner and Joint Director of Health Services, Kamrup.

In the Kamrup Metro area, announcement is being done through loudspeakers from December 11 in order to create awareness about the disease and to inform people about the prohibitory order issued under Section 144, by the district administration, warning people against buying and selling of poultry and poultry products, stated NRHM sources.

Flex banners are also being put up in the major daily markets, bus stands and hospitals to inform people about the hazards of avian flu.

District surveillance officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme Dr Sujata Roy is imparting training to doctors and health workers on surveillance and treatment.

In rural areas, public awareness meetings are being organised with the help of the Circle and Block Development offices as well as Police and Veterinary Departments.
