Germany on alert for bird flu

Frankfurt - Germany awaits the occurrence of more cases of bird flu in its territory, said Friday the German Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Horst Seehofer, while continuing the analysis of birds found dead on the island of Ruegen (northeast).
German laboratories are tested in the remains of about 80 birds and "of course is expected to be more positive cases found among these animals," Seehofer said at a news conference.
This week were found on the island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea, the remains of 13 dead birds carrying the virus dangerous H5N1 bird flu virus in its highly pathogenic form.

The remains of 80 birds also come from Ruegen, located in the territory of the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The other German regions have not been affected so far, but the minister urged the authorities in all the provinces to be ready to act.

"It's very important to consider the possibility that the situation is geographically spread," said Seehofer.

German Agriculture Minister urged the public and the press not to stay in the places where they were found the remains of birds infected with the virus and to "act responsibly".
The German government declared Friday from compulsory confinement of poultry throughout the territory. Minister Seehofer warned of "zero tolerance" for those who violate the measure. "We are facing a dangerous epidemic," he said.

Regional Minister Mecklembuergo Western Pomerania ordered on Wednesday the immediate confinement of all poultry in the territory of the Land, after learning of the occurrence of cases of wild birds infected with avian influenza virus H5N1 in the island of Ruegen.
