Govt heightens surveillance in bird flu outbreak area
BHAKTAPUR, NOV 30 - The government on Wednesday heightened quarantine mesures in the Bird flu (H5N1 virus) outbreak area near Lokanthali on the bank of Manohara river in Madhyapur Thimi Municipality, Bhaktapur.
A surveillance team has been formed for a close observation. The team will be responsible to report to the Veterinary Services Directorate every Thursday, sources confirmed.
The government has directed not to allow farming chickens and ducks for 42 days.
According to District Livestock Services Chief Shiva Bahadur Kc, the government has intensified observation at Bhaktapur-2 Municipality and 16 VDCs of the district.
He also informed that awareness programmes have also been made in the district to contain flu outbreak.
Over 300 chickens and ducks were slaughtered after the Veterinary Epidemiology Centre in Tripureshwor confirmed the outbreak of the avian flu at the poultry farm owned by Chandra Bahadur Tamang on Tuesday. It also said the outbreak is the first one in the valley.
Tamang had filed a complaint at the office of the livestock services after 90 chickens on his farm died on November 9 and 10. A sample of the dead chicken was then sent for tests to the Veterinary Laboratory Agency, Weybridge, United Kingdom. The test results on Friday confirmed that the chickens died of bird flu.
