#H7N9 Shanghai Reports New Case

The Centre for Health Protection today verified with the National Health & Family Planning Commission an additional human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Shanghai affecting a 86-year-old man.

The case was confirmed yesterday, and the man is now being treated in a local hospital.

To date, 145 human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) have been confirmed in the Mainland, including Zhejiang (51 cases), Shanghai (34 cases), Jiangsu (28 cases), Guangdong (six cases), Jiangxi (six cases), Fujian (five cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (four cases), Beijing (two cases), Hunan (two cases), Shandong (two cases) and Hebei (one case).

The centre will follow-up with Mainland health authorities on the case.


SHANGHAI, Jan. 4 -- A human case of H7N9 was reported in Shanghai on Saturday, the municipality's health and family planning commission said in a statement.

The patient is an 86-year-old local surnamed Zhou. He was confirmed to be infected with the bird flu virus on Friday.

The patient is receiving treatment at a local hospital, the statement said.
