Nov 17, 2008

Dr Phan Thi Ninh, deputy director of Ha Tinh Province’s Department of Health, yesterday dismissed rumors that Le Thi Hong, 11, of Cam Xuyen District, died of the mystery fever that has affected many people.

She said the girl died of brain inflammation. But she was admitted to hospital with high temperature, breathing difficulties, and convulsions last Thursday.

Five other children were hospitalized with the same symptoms as Hong.

Hong’s death has set off rumors of many deaths and hospitalizations in Cam Loc, her commune.

The department has entrusted the province’s Medical Contingency Center with investigation the case, Dr. Ninh said.

The five children have recovered and would be discharged this week, she said.

The department is set to have a meeting with local authorities to discover the cause of the fever.
