LIBREVILLE, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Gabonese monitors of the dreaded Ebola hemorrhagic fever have found that the deadly pandemic will soon be circumscribed.

The finding was unveiled on Saturday by Jean Paul Gonzalez, director general of the International Center of Medical Researches in Franceville (CIRMF) in the southeast of the country.

"Our teams ... have taken means to counter the effects of the Ebola virus and effectively fight against this painful affection," said the CIRMF chief, who heads the most reputed research center on Ebola in central Africa.

The finding was based on the initial results of the laboratory of the National Institute of Biological Researches in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

DR Congo's Ministry of Health declared on Dec. 25 that there was an outbreak of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever in Western Kasai Province.

Three days later, the World Health Organization reported 35 suspected cases in Western Kasai Province, including 11 deaths. Only two patients were confirmed as contracting Ebola virus at the time.

The CIRMF chief said their finding also proves that the hemorrhagic fever in Kasai is due to Ebola virus.

Laboratory tests are now taking place in DR Congo, Gabon and South Africa.

In 1995, a major Ebola outbreak was reported in DR Congo, which was then known as Zaire, killing 250 of the 315 patients, including health workers falling ill through contact with infected blood.
